Did you know lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death? Our teams have been busy supporting community events, including partnering with other health systems, to raise awareness of this disease and the screening available to detect it early. The Native American Community Clinic Fall Harvest Health Fair, Buffalo Strong Street Party of Hope, and Minnesota State Fair are just a few of the events we’ve been proud to attend recently. If you’re between the ages of 50 and 80, are a current smoker or quite smoking in the last 15 years, talk to your primary care provider about whether lung cancer screening is right for you.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024 As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month from October 1 to 30, it's crucial to highlight the importance of awareness and advocacy in combating this prevalent disease. With around 2.3 million new cases globally each year, breast cancer affects one in eight individuals and disproportionately impacts younger populations in resource-constrained settings. By promoting simple lifestyle changes-like a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and regular exercise-we can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer. Let’s unite in raising awareness and encouraging early detection and screening. At JFC Munene College of Health Sciences, our focus this month is to facilitate knowledge sharing and foster partnerships for breast cancer control. We advocate for patient-centered care that addresses both medical and emotional needs, ensuring equitable access to resources and support. Together, we can drive meaningful change and empower our community to prioritize health and awareness! #BreastCancerAwareness #JFCMunene #HealthAdvocacy

At the #LungCancer Equity Summit, we came together to deliver a simple but powerful message: GET SCREENED! 🫁 Lung cancer screening saves lives, but the reality is heartbreaking. While millions of people qualify for screening, only a small percentage actually get screened. Screening rates are especially low in Black and Brown communities, where disparities in healthcare access and trust play a huge role. So, who should be screened for lung cancer? 🚬 Adults aged 50–80 who have a 20-pack-year smoking history (equivalent to smoking 1 pack a day for 20 years). 🚬 Current smokers or those who quit within the last 15 years. 🛑🚭 And YES, never-smokers can still be at risk. 1 in 5!! What does screening look like? It’s quick and non-invasive—usually a low-dose CT scan that can detect lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Screening isn’t just for smokers. It’s for anyone at risk. If we want to close the gap and save lives, it starts with awareness and action. Let’s change the stats. Let’s get screened.
