Vernon Hills Park District Awarded $600,000 OSLAD Grant Governor JB Pritzker along with state and local leaders and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) awarded $55.2 million in state grants for 100 local park projects throughout Illinois. OSLAD (Open Space Land Acquisition and Development) is a grant-sharing program between state and local governments that helps communities fund land acquisition and development for parks and outdoor recreation projects. “The program enables agencies to promote healthier lifestyles and improve the quality of life for their residents while boosting local economies and positively impacting the environment” stated Peter Murphy, President and CEO of the Illinois Association of Park Districts. The Vernon Hills Park District has been awarded a $600,000 OSLAD Grant to support significant enhancements at Grosse Pointe Park. Planned improvements include comprehensive renovations to the ballfields, the addition of a new picnic shelter for large gatherings, a basketball court, and a ninja course. The project will also feature restroom upgrades, parking lot enhancements, retaining wall reconstruction, and walking path improvements with integrated fitness stations. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2025.

The magnitude of this should not be underestimated. I'm not referring to the amount of work that will have gone into the processes and paperwork to change the name itself but what will be facing the ongoing marketing/comms team: ©️Visual corporate identity and branding- updating logos on stationery, posters, physical signage, webpages, social pages, branded slides, documentation.....This will be time-intestive, expensive and will require university-wide cooperation to ensure updates are done in a timely way and any old logos are disregarded. 📣 Corporate messaging - ensuring that new or updated university-wide messaging is coherent and effectively communicated takes time and effort to embed. Staff briefings and communications for recruitment events, applicant communications all need to be disseminated and embedded to ensure a consistent and coherent corporate message 🌐SEO marketing - making sure webpages and other digital content are re-tagged, and optimised for discoverability in ways which are aligned to corporate messaging can take a lot of time and strategic oversight. I'm sure this is an exciting (albeit daunting) time for the marketing/comms team. I sure hope the return on investment will be worth it.

Ongoing results: - Scheduling Efficiency: Accurate data on concrete strength helped in scheduling subsequent construction activities efficiently, minimizing downtime and delays. - Cost Management: Monitoring prevented issues like delayed curing or weak spots, reducing costs associated with repairs, rework, and project overruns. Provided large savings on utility costs due to precise monitoring and notifications of concrete temperature. - Quality Control: Sensors ensure the curing process meets specified parameters and standards; and provide precise data for documenting concrete performance. I love this kind of stuff. It was a treat to walk with a bunch of high school students through downtown Vancouver and specifically ask them to pay attention not to what was being sold in stores, but what was above, below and in front of them. For many, it was the first time they looked at buildings with an eye on how and why they exist the way they do. Most live in suburban, single-family homes. To hear one student say "it must be nice to be able to walk to everything" almost had me jumping up and down. We had discussions about whether parking should be free, whether housing should be mixed with childcare (which the students aptly recognized was a need) and asked why there were so many breweries and not more smoothie bars/places for teens. Back in the "classroom", I was both delighted and bewildered that in less than an hour, some student groups proposed projects eerily similar our development plan for 12th and Main. We certainly took more time than that to land on the right plan! The goal of the field trip was to introduce students to the different careers associated with real estate development. We touched on everything from designers to planners to analysts to estimators. I'm looking forward to having them back once 12th and Main is well under construction for introductions to the trades. Whatever their career interest may be, it's clear there are some bright minds in the pipeline. If anyone out there knows of Vancouver-area schools or programs interested in this type of activity, please let me know. We might make this a recurring thing.
