Join us this Wednesday, July 17! Center for Ethical Land Transition will share more about approaches to land justice by sharing two land transition stories. Grounding Justice in the Land is a joint webinar with PolicyLink's Spatial Futures team. More details -- 🌀 As we develop reparative spatial justice strategies that reckon with, repair, and transform the racist foundations of land and housing policies in the United States, we are reminded that it is essential that we understand the centrality of land for Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities. Across the country, and indeed across the world, communities that have faced legacies of dispossession and displacement are growing movements to reshape our relationships to land and create more just spatial futures. In this webinar, we invite you to learn more about the strategies that communities across the country are using to transition land from the speculative market and into community-controlled models of land stewardship and caretaking. 📅 Wed, July 17 🕰 12 - 2pm PST ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/g-FnjRbc

How connected are you to your local community? How could you strengthen this connection? The panel discussion below explores the deepening polarization and “structural aloneness” in our society, and ways we might create stronger connection and community. Some of my takeaways: 📌 Knowing at least 6 neighbors is linked to lower rates of depression and social anxiety 📌 Local community groups promote civic engagement and participatory government, which can help to combat growing distrust in institutions 📌 Creating a vibrant civic system is more like an ecological restoration project than an engineering project – it requires more patience and attention to multiple elements at once There were so many actions big and small that this panel offered for those of us who want to contribute to a stronger sense of local community: participate in clubs, welcome new neighbors, volunteer, and advocate for better public spaces. One suggestion I particularly loved was the idea of inviting “alumni” -- past residents of a locality – to connect with newcomers. Deep gratitude to panelists Sam Pressler, Pete Davis, Josh Fryday, Hollie Russon Gilman, Ph.D., and Aaron Horvath for an insightful and inspiring 90 minutes!
