The pH value in a wound is an indicator for the healing phase, going from high (alkaline) to low (acidic) during the healing process. By using Intermittent Impulse Compression (IIC) in chronic venous leg ulcers , wound pH values have decreased significantly in comparison to the control group, which indicates that IIC can (re)start the reparative processes in wound healing. IIC is a special kind of IPC (Intermittent Pneumatic Compression), which creates a jet-like blood flow in the veins and hence massive shear stress to the endothelium. Nitric oxide and tissue hormones are released, which increase micro and macro circulation as well as tissue oxygenation.
