I was recently invited by the Cyber Leadership Institute to share my journey. Below are the four points I shared:
• Most of the time, the thing holding us back is ourselves. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄.
• Taking chances on people is important. In my case, Renaldo J. took a chance on me twice, and is the reason I am in cybersecurity today. Everyone deserves to meet their '𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘰' early in their career.
• Commit to development and networking. Early in my career, I tilted the scale in favor of development; there was no balance. Later, that decision enabled me to achieve much better work/life balance. You need to find the formula that works for you. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱.
• Meeting Phillimon Zongo was the turning point for me. Many do not know, but my speaking and writing only started after a conversation I had with Phill in 2022. Up until that moment, my plan was centered around training and development only. I had done a master’s degree, #CISSP, #CISM, and everything in between, but progress was marginal. Since following the advice from Phil, progress has been exponential and consistent.
I believe that the most important question we can ask ourselves is, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲? Someone is going to be the first Minister of Cybersecurity in South Africa, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
Thanks Darren Argyle FCIIS, Phillimon Zongo, Jan Schreuder, and the Cyber Leadership Institute for this opportunity to share a little about my story.

On Wednesday evening we held the first Cyber Leadership Institute (CLI) community call of 2024.
In the call:
✅ We shared new launches and plans for what's next at CLI.
✅ Jacqui L. shared her career journey delving into the inspiration for AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network and the importance of inspiring kids from a young age to get excited about technology.
✅ Grant Hughes shared his career story — as a lifelong learner he found the Cyber Leadership Program to be a game changer for his career and outlined why it was a major turning point.
✅ We opened the floor for general discussion.
As the African proverb says, 'Sticks in a bundle cannot be broken'. We are stronger together.
