October is Global Diversity Awareness Month. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) programs have been attracting some bad press lately with some people feeling they do more harm than good. But research says that diversity is crucial for building talented teams of engaged, motivated employees, and organizations with diverse, inclusive teams have an advantage over their less diverse, less inclusive competitors. At Albany, our DE&I efforts aren't about putting one group above another or giving unfair advantages to some individuals. It's about seeing diversity as a strength and making sure we are all able to contribute to the company's success. It's about teamwork of the best kind, where individuals are valued for their unique abilities and contributions, and we combine our strengths for collective success. It’s Day 2 of Inclusion Week! When the topic of Inclusion arises, we often hear the word BELONG. Most people talk about their belongingness to an organization’s culture. But what really makes employees feel like they belong? An organization’s culture is tied to a collection of repeated behaviors experienced over time. So when someone says “I Belong”, they are expressing a positive emotion towards an organization’s people, policies, and practices based on their experiences. If you want to increase belongingness within your organization, consider implementing the following behaviors: · Seek diverse perspectives, invite debate, and listen attentively. · Don’t be afraid to hire people smarter than you, and empower them. · Influence and enlist cooperation across organizational boundaries. · Reward agility and innovation as much as productivity. · Be strategic: contribute ideas, ask questions, inspire others, and learn. · Ask WHY and dig deep to learn. · If there is a mistake, own it, and move quickly to resolve it. · Unleash the potential in others through peer coaching, reverse mentoring, and leadership. · Define success collectively. · Do what is right. · Determine the risk tolerance and communicate it clearly. · Attract and engage diverse talent and perspectives across the organization. What does Global Diversity Month mean to you? I always enjoy participating in Global Diversity Awareness Month because it reminds us of how our unique ethnicities, cultures, heritages, experiences, abilities, and many other identities influence how we see and interact with the world. This month is a chance to reflect on how our diverse backgrounds help us build a more inclusive and understanding society. It’s our differences that help us create deeper understanding and stronger connections. How do you embrace diversity in your personal and professional life? I embrace diversity by actively seeking out and learning from different perspectives. Engaging with people from diverse backgrounds expands my understanding and helps me grow, as these varied experiences shape how I see the world and how I contribute to it. What advice would you give to someone who wants to contribute to creating a more inclusive and diverse environment at work? My advice is first to understand your own strengths and values. From there, focus on building a network of allies and DIB (diversity, inclusion, and belonging) champions who share a similar vision for the broader work. Once you identify those areas to work on, begin chipping away at them. Even the smallest changes in culture or messaging, or creating a sense of belonging, can be life-changing for someone else.
