India's installed colocation (Colo) data centre capacity was 977 MW (IT load) at the end of 2023. Approximately 258 MW arrived in 2023 in the top 7 Indian cities. This is a significant figure that exceeded the 126 MW capacity expansion in 2022. Additionally, the capacity increased in 2022 was 24% more than that added in 2021. In Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi NCR, operators added 93 MW of additional IT capacity in the second half of 2023. But are we building enough, or are we just making progress? India's Data Center Boom Catching Up to Go 10X While India may currently lag behind the global data center hubs like Virginia and China in scale, the nation is making rapid strides, according to KS Ganesan (KSG) Advisor and Managing Partner at Netcon. Some key perspectives KSG shares: 20 Years to 1GW, Next 10 Years to 10GW "It took us 20 years to reach 1GW of data center capacity in India. I predict we will become 10X of that to 10GW in the next 10 years driven by hyperscalers and private players." Emerging Data Center Hubs Hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Pune, and Hyderabad are emerging as India's data center growth engines. Robust Policy Support "Policy measures are being put in place to adopt global best practices and standards for utilities like power, water and land." Edge Data Center Proliferation Beyond core hubs, KSG sees a proliferation of distributed edge data centers for low-latency use cases like 4K video streaming from mobile devices. India's data center capacity and reach will only grow rapidly amid the democratization of data consumption. Netcon is partnering with enterprises to architect and future-proof their data center infrastructure to meet this explosive demand. How do you see India's data center landscape evolving? We'd value your perspectives. #DataCenters #DigitalIndia #DigitalTransformation #CloudInfra #5G #genzealtech GenZeal Technology Services KS Ganesan Mohamed Ashiq Mahalingam Ramasamy Lakshmeesha Rao Rohit S. Data centers in India are rapidly expanding, driven by the increasing demand for cloud services, data localization mandates, and the overall growth in digital consumption. Here are some of the significant aspects; 1.Growth & Investment India has seen substantial investment in data centers from both domestic and global tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Reliance Jio, along with investments from specialized players like NTT and Equinix. New facilities are being built across the country, with major hubs in cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore. This growth is fueled by government incentives, strategic location advantages, and increasing data consumption. 2. Data Localization India’s push for data localization, particularly through the upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Act and the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) guidelines, mandates that certain types of data remain within national borders. This requirement has encouraged companies to invest in local data infrastructure, enhancing the domestic data center market’s size and sophistication. 3. Infrastructure & Energy Challenges** Energy reliability is a major factor, as data centers consume significant power and need consistent cooling and operational uptime. This leads to challenges in terms of sustainable energy usage, though there is a growing focus on renewable energy sources. Some data centers are beginning to explore green data center practices, including renewable energy sourcing and efficient cooling systems, to reduce environmental impact. 4. Security & Compliance Data centers in India are bound to comply with both local and international standards for data protection, such as the ISO 27001 standard, ensuring data security and resilience. The demand for data centers will continue to rise with India's focus on digital transformation, e-commerce growth, and smart cities initiatives. Additionally, 5G adoption is likely to drive even more data processing needs, pushing further development and localization in data center infrastructure. India’s data center landscape is poised for growth, but it also faces challenges regarding sustainable infrastructure, security, and regulatory alignment. With evolving laws around data privacy and localization, data centers will likely continue to be a focal point for both technological and legal innovation in India. #dataprivacy #datacenters #datacompliance #5G #Smartcities
