Thanks David G. Victor for supporting the IMPACT Forum. 🔔 Looking back over the last few months, I seem to sense a certain ESG fatigue. Regulation, increasing reporting requirements and the lack of immediate decarbonisation solutions don't help.  The need for companies to report stable & growing revenues and profits makes it easy to lose sight of the long term implications of not decarbonising. BUT: The risk of not decarbonising comes at a high price. THEREFORE: Let's not be distracted by short-termism. 📉 I am convinced that our industry, while an essential thread in the fabric of modern life, will not get a free pass. We must actively develop solutions to maintain and enhance our credibility, and to manage our risk. 💡 This is the rationale behind the IMPACT Forum: taking stock, understanding the gaps, agreeing and developing solutions through cross-stakeholder and cross-country collaboration. Today’s announcement from AirNZ that they will abandon their 2030 decarbonisation targets was huge. I think it raises a few important questions for businesses: 1) is the impact of directors having to take responsibility for climate related disclosures bringing the feasibility of targets and commitments into much sharper focus? Is this where we ‘actually get real’? Are boards prepared to make public commitments? 2) have companies been sufficiently thorough in their climate scenario process to explore and actually challenge plausibility of scenarios? And have they followed through to ensure that plans are, or can be, put in place to manage the various contingencies? Do sectoral scenarios cover an appropriate spectrum of really challenging outcomes? How do we avoid regression to the mean? 3) have companies engaged the right breadth of stakeholders and technical expertise to underpin scenarios and target setting? There is uncertainty at every level, so leveraging a broad range of relevant and technically qualified experts on the most material issues and drivers is critical. 🛫 Breakthrough in Single European Sky: A Step Forward for Climate 🌍 Last week, the European Parliament voted on the Single European Sky (SES) initiative. After a decade of negotiations, this agreement marks a crucial moment for European aviation and therefore for a consistent sector in transportation emissions accounting. This is the first real introduction of a climate dimension in an air mobility framework. While not a revolution, it's certainly important given the subject. Here's why this agreement is significant: - 1️⃣ "Climate" becomes a Key Performance Indicator in air traffic management - 2️⃣ Air navigation charges will be modulated based on environmental impact - 3️⃣ Climate-optimized flight trajectories are envisioned - 4️⃣ Non-CO2 impacts of flights will be considered - 5️⃣ Climate performance targets will become more stringent over time The agreement aligns with the European Green Deal, aiming to reduce transport emissions by 90% by 2050. It incentivizes clean propulsion technologies and sustainable aviation fuels, enables climate-optimized flight trajectories, and could potentially reduce aviation emissions by up to 10% (though debated). This is an important step towards more sustainable aviation. It integrates climate considerations into the heart of European air traffic management, aligning with Green Deal objectives. The challenge now will be the effective implementation of these measures. As climate policy experts, our role in monitoring and guiding these changes will be crucial. 26 of the 55 Essential Climate Variables can only be monitored from space. The strategic mapping exercise below is a really useful tool for all policy-makers, multilateral strategists, experts and countries requiring capacity-building assistance to understand: 1️⃣ how space data, services and technologies can be leveraged to mitigate and respond to #ClimateChange; and 2️⃣ how the likes of the United Nations, CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) and other international or regional organisations can assist countries with capacity-building. Was proud to got this project off the ground during the 🇬🇧 Chairmanship of #COP26 in Glasgow. Here's to a successful #COP29 in Baku.
