image Do you ever feel like your restaurant is a puzzle with missing pieces? It’s so frustrating. I know you can see the end result so clearly and you’re putting in the effort but things just aren’t coming together the way you’d hoped. I felt like this almost every day in my own restaurants. It wasn’t until I not only had all the pieces in my hand but also knew what order to put them into that things finally started coming together. My restaurant and team were finally running the way I knew they could and should. When I work one-on-one with clients, I give them all the pieces and lay out the plan for putting it all together. Not everyone can afford — or even wants — to work one-on-one which is why I created SCALE. The publishing world is full of well-meaning but half-baked advice, and this one is a classic: “Offer your book for free to build buzz.” The idea stems from the belief that “free” is a foolproof way to drive attention and sales. However, sometimes, giving away your hard work for free hurts your credibility—and your business. Imagine a fine dining restaurant, renowned for exquisite cuisine and a luxurious ambiance. The owner decides to attract more guests by offering 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘴 𝘪𝘯. The response is overwhelming—crowds flood in. But there’s a problem: most of these guests aren’t his target diners. They’re there for the free experience, not the quality or unique ambiance he’s spent years creating. After the promotion ends, few return. Loyal patrons who valued the exclusive experience drift away, questioning if the restaurant’s quality is still worth the premium. Your authority-building, client-attracting book is much like that restaurant. If you want to avoid the restaurateur’s mistake, the key is strategy. Without it, “free” doesn’t equal value—and not every book is a candidate for a free strategy. Offering the wrong book for free (or without purpose) is like tossing money into the air on a crowded street. You may attract a crowd. But they are people looking for free stuff, not ideal clients who see the true value in your expertise. Instead, a smart freebie strategy draws in readers who 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 because they value your insights. Here are some better strategies for your client-attracting book: 𝐔𝐬𝐞 ‘𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞’ 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭: Offer a chapter or a valuable guide related to your book, giving readers a 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 of your expertise without devaluing your full content. 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬: If you want to make your book available for free, time-box the offer or add a VIP twist, like a Q&A session with you. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞-𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Offer exclusive add-ons for paying readers, like bonus content or downloadable tools, making it clear that your work is worth the investment. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 (𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝒊𝒕): Think about your approach to “free.” Are you giving away too much or without purpose? Audit your “free” offers and ask if they’re helping attract the right audience. Could you add a strategic layer of exclusivity or value? Have you ever used a “free sample” approach that brought in your ideal clients or readers? Share what worked for you in the comments—your success could inspire others looking to build real value with their audience!

Diner Menu vs. Fine Dining Menu - know the difference. 👇🏻 Let's start with why you want your service page to look like a fine dining menu. Here are the 6 reasons your business should take a page out of the fine dining business model. Consider this your “way out” from the endless chasing of prospects & RFP submissions. 1. How are professional services or consulting companies the same as a fine dining restaurant? Turns out there are a bunch of similarities! I've recently read Will Guidara's book, Unreasonable Hospitality and will provide some of my favorite quotes and thoughts that I had while reading. First Quote: "When you get too caught up in showing your prowess - "Look at what we can do!" - you're losing focus on the only thing that matters, which is what will make your customers happy." It's easy to get caught up in the day to day and lose focus on WHY you and your team have been engaged by a client. Building a new application or service was the task that was needed, but what did you do in the process that delighted the client and their end users in the process? What are some small things that could have been done along the way to REALLY impress? Did you actually deliver something that they didn't even really care for (i.e. a canalé that was often uneaten)? Take some time to fully understand the intent behind the task. What are some of the unwritten, unspoken things you can do that will make the outcome exceptional, not just expected. Further more, if you're looking for exceptional outcomes, give the team at BUILDSTR a shout! We're always searching for ways to impress.

As a founder, what's the 🔑 to breaking free from the sales process?? Simple. Think of your business like a fine dining kitchen. Confused? Let me elaborate. First, you need a sales process. 2 Parts to this. The menu - What happens in the customer journey from a macro level. The recipes - step-by-step guide and instructions for each part of the menu. Then you need staff... The brigade - the people you bring into your kitchen. How complex your menu is dictates what skills and experience you need... ....and whether they will need to have worked at a similar restaurant. The training - a busy kitchen doesn't have time to spend hours training in service. What's the most effective way of getting the new chefs up to speed (detailed menus, instructions and walk-throughs) Tools and technology - what the chefs need to give your customers the best experience possible, and work as efficiently as possible. Always a pleasure to speak with Terrence Branley. Looking forward to the next one. If you have founders in your network that might like this, share or comment below.
