🚗🔋 Revolutionizing EV Heating: Using MOSFETs in Traction Inverters 🔋🚗 I recently came across an innovative idea from an article based on an SAE technical paper. This novel design introduces a "third switching state" to the traction inverter, transforming it into an efficient heat source for both the cabin and battery pack. This method leverages the existing MOSFETs in the inverter, making it a cost-effective and innovative solution. How It Works: By partially turning on the low-side MOSFETs in the inverter's phase legs, the system creates Joule heating. This heat is then transferred to the coolant, which circulates through the vehicle's heating system. The inverter's MOSFETs act as resistors, generating heat without driving the motor. Cost Benefits Traditional resistor-based heaters add significant costs to EV manufacturing, typically between $200 and $500. This new method, however, adds only about $20 to the vehicle's manufacturing cost, making it a highly economical alternative. Heat Generation Calculation - Assumptions - Battery voltage Vds: 400V - Gate voltage Vgs: 3.75V - Saturation current Ids: 3A - Number of MOSFETs per phase leg: 3 - Number of phase legs: 6 - Heat Generated by Each MOSFET: - Power dissipation P = Vds * Ids - P = 400V * 3A = 1200W - Total Heat Generated: - Each MOSFET is turned on for 1/3 of the inverter's sine-wave cycle, so the average power dissipation per MOSFET is 400W. - Total heat generated by all MOSFETs = 400W * 3 MOSFETs * 6 phase legs = 7200W (7.2kW) This innovative approach not only reduces costs but also enhances the efficiency of EV heating systems.
