What Has Happened To China Southern Airlines' Former Airbus A380s? As the only airline in China that has operated the Airbus A380 to date, China Southern Airlines received five A380 aircraft between October 2011 and February 2013. Subsequently, China Southern Airlines primarily used its A380s for international long-haul routes (such as Beijing to Los Angeles, Guangzhou to Sydney, etc.) and its most important domestic route (its base Guangzhou to Beijing). China Southern Airlines' A380 aircraft had achieved many remarkable performances, such as being the only profitable A380 fleet globally in 2019. However, after the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the civil aviation industry suffered an unprecedented blow, with many international routes being forced to suspend or reduce flights. The A380, as a giant passenger aircraft, was particularly hard hit, with its high operating and maintenance costs making it difficult to meet market demand. Could the aviation world finally see new competitors to break the Airbus-Boeing stranglehold? At the opening of Aviation Future Week, Flydubai’s CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith called for a third or fourth aircraft manufacturer to enter the market, pointing out the heavy reliance on Airbus and Boeing as a barrier to growth for airlines. Al Ghaith argued that increased competition would drive innovation and reduce the bottleneck currently facing airlines, especially with ongoing delays from Boeing and Airbus. Other airline executives shared similar sentiments, highlighting the potential for Chinese manufacturer Comac to rise as a competitor. However, Air Arabia’s Tony Whitby cautioned that Comac’s planes are still in their early stages, needing to prove their operational efficiency outside China before becoming viable alternatives. Türkiye's national flag carrier is in talks with both Airbus and Boeing about acquiring 235 aircraft as part of its expansion plans, its chief announced Monday. Turkish Airlines' (THY) 10-year fleet plan, unveiled last year, shows it aims to expand by almost 600 planes. Airbus delivers 61 aircraft in April to 33 customers European aerospace giant Airbus delivered 61 airliners to 33 customers around the globe in April 2024 bringing year to date deliveries to 203. April saw primarily A320 family deliveries with 22 Airbus A320neo and 29 A321neo airliners being delivered to customers including easyJet, Wizz Air and British Airways. Other single-aisle deliveries included three Airbus A220-300s to Delta Airlines, Breeze and Air Lease Corporation. For wide-bodies six A350-900s were delivered to Air France, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa whilst a sole A330-900 went to ITA Airways. During the same period Arbus got gross orders for 57 aircraft including 51 A321neos from an undisclosed customer, 5 A320neo family aircraft from British Airways and one A350-900 from Japan Airlines. The strong orders and deliveries will be welcome news for the UK where the wings for all A3XX family airlines are made as well as Rolls-Royce engines used on many models. Source: UK Aviation News

Turkish budget carrier Pegasus Airlines has announced it intends to retain its Boeing 737 fleet as it looks to meet growing demand for its services. The announcement marks a sudden about-turn for the carrier which had previously announced that it would become an all-Airbus operator by the end of 2025.    The airline currently has 12 Boeing 737-800s in its fleet with an average age of 9.5 years. The carrier also operates 95 Airbus A320 family aircraft, including seven A320-200s, 46 A320neos, and 42 A321neos. The company also has a further 67 A321neos on order from Airbus. “We were heading to a single-type fleet,” Chief Executive Officer Guliz Ozturk said. “However, with this growth and with this size, we made our internal analysis and feasibility and decided to keep nine Boeing aircraft. South Korean low-cost carrier T'way Air is accelerating its expansion into Europe with the launch of new routes to Rome and Barcelona. As of 7 June, the airline announced that it had secured the necessary approvals to start flights to Frankfurt in October and is in the final stages of preparations to introduce services to Paris, following an agreement between Korean and French aviation authorities. Starting on 8 August, T'way Air will begin thrice-weekly flights to Rome, followed by the inauguration of its Barcelona service on 11 September. These routes will be serviced by the airline’s Airbus A330-200, which seats 246 passengers.
