TCEQ released its final recommendations today for PM2.5 designations in Texas counties. Let’s dig in: 👍 Harris County is in Non-Attainment. With the highest annual PM2.5 levels in the state, there could be no other outcome. Non-Attainment means that changes by industry, TxDOT, and others will be REQUIRED in order to better protect public health. This is a win for Harris County. 👎 TCEQ made other Attainment decisions that they themselves call “controversial,” because they are, such as removing the data from the I-35 air monitor in Austin, so Travis County could stay in Attainment and avoid mandatory change. While Harris County residents may be more protected now, many of our Texas neighbors in counties like Travis -- or in the many other counties like Fort Bend that simply lack a regulatory air monitor -- are not. This is a loss for public health in our state as a whole. 😷 PM2.5 is one of the most concerning air pollutants for health, clearly linked to respiratory and cardiac events, poor reproductive health outcomes, poor mental health, and more. 💪 Air Alliance Houston will continue to advocate alongside our partners across Texas to realize regulations and rules that are truly protective. Because everyone deserves to breathe clean air. #CleanAirForAll. https://lnkd.in/gyVVKgt4
