Despite all of the hype and drama surrounding the benefits of AI, there’s still a lot of things that it cannot do. Yes, its performance has awed the masses and persuaded many entrepreneurs to go all in on the technology, but this hype and bravado needs to be tempered with some reality. AI technology still cannot fully grasp the varieties of context found in human languages. Plus, it doesn’t know when sarcasm, euphemisms and other subtleties are being used and that can seriously impact user output. And then there’s the abstract process behind human creativity and emotional intelligence. Yes, AI can analyze data and spot patterns, but can it grasp these higher level human attributes and others such as inspiration and intuitive thought? No! So, while we’re waiting for those pieces of the puzzle to be found,  let’s use this technology to its fullest and appreciate AI’s current capabilities. In shaping a Humans + AI world the most important application of AI is to enhance human thinking. There are a multitude of cognitive and action domains for implementing AI-augmented thinking. Each requires distinct strategies and approaches. This visual shows 8 key domains where AI can enhance human thinking, if used well, and a small selection of the specific applications. For example, generative AI can assist in assimilating information into knowledge and useful mental models using a range of techniques, from search distillation and concept visualization through to semantic space mapping and cognitive debiasing. Complex problem-solving can be supported by problem decomposition, context reframing, applying analytic frameworks, and bringing in diverse stakeholder perspectives, among other tools. Using AI to support effective human decision-making is at the center of my work. Just a handful of the many useful techniques in this area are shown in this diagram. Some tasks and decisions we can begin to delegate to AI, with appropriate human involvement and oversight. These agents promise to scale AI capabilities beyond traditional interfaces by streamlining processes and reducing user input, as noted by Christopher Penn of TrustInsights.ai. Meanwhile, researchers are exploring self-improving AI systems that leverage techniques like Reinforcement Learning to optimize long-term outcomes, potentially revolutionizing various industries. Concurrently, a new study from East China Normal University proposes a method for AI to accurately recognize and respond to human emotions, combining psychological insights with advanced technology for applications in healthcare and customer service. In the marketing sector, empathy is emerging as a critical component for integrating AI tools effectively, as emphasized by WPP's Roy Armale, who advocates for a balance between automation and human insight in marketing strategies. Together, these developments illustrate a transformative landscape where AI continues to evolve and integrate into multiple facets of life and industry.

Recently, I had a thought-provoking debate with a colleague: Can AI hallucinations ever be completely solved? . . . . . I initially thought, "AI is probabilistic, so there's always a chance it might make something up." My colleague believed technology would eventually solve these errors. We didn't reach a definitive conclusion, but it got me thinking deeper. When we say "hallucinations," what do we mean? Humans get things wrong all the time, but we don’t call it hallucinating. We call it misremembering, getting confused, or miscommunication, and research shows that our memories literally change over time. Our memories are not static; they evolve and change every time we recall them. Much like how AI produces different thoughts each time they go through the neural network. But what if AI were just a perfect recall machine? If you asked it to write an email, it would likely just copy known emails verbatim. But I want an AI that generates fresh, new content every time. Essentially, I want it to create new ideas—I want it to hallucinate. The challenge is balancing creativity with accuracy. This is crucial for both AI and humans. For simple facts, like who the first president of the USA was, accuracy is easy. But for complex tasks, like improving a sales email or designing a new water turbine, I want AI to do what I do—take some facts, question others, and experiment with new ideas. This involves some level of hallucination—making things up. Further complicating the issue of "solving hallucinations" is that each person defines the acceptable balance between creativity and factual accuracy differently, and this can vary with each question they ask. AI is not a mind reader and can't automatically know these preferences. It faces the same challenge we do: communication and understanding context. Just as we need to clearly express our expectations to each other, we need to do the same with AI. It needs guidance to balance innovation and precision. So maybe the goal isn't to eliminate AI hallucinations but to harness them in a way that fuels creativity while maintaining a variable grip on reality. What do you think? Ever wondered what AI 🤖 would look like in the future? Lets take a look into the AI we have 🔎 1. Narrow AI (Also Called Weak AI) 🤖 What It Is: Narrow AI is the kind of AI we use every day. It’s designed to do one specific job really well. But that’s all it can do—it doesn’t have the ability to think or learn outside of that one task. Examples: Voice Assistants: Like Siri or Alexa, which can answer questions or set reminders. Recommendation Systems: Like those on Netflix or YouTube, which suggest movies or videos based on what you’ve watched before. Image Recognition: AI that can look at a picture and tell you what’s in it, like identifying faces in photos. Why It’s Important: Narrow AI is powerful because it can handle tasks faster and more accurately than humans in some cases, but it’s limited to the job it was created for. 2. General AI (Also Called Strong AI) 🤖 What It Is: General AI would be like having a super-smart computer that can think and learn just like a human. It could do anything a person can do, from solving math problems to having a conversation or even creating art. Examples: Right now, there are no real examples because General AI doesn’t exist yet. But if it did, it would be like a computer with human-like intelligence. Why It’s Important: General AI is a big goal for scientists because it could potentially take on any job or task, not just one specific thing. It would be able to learn new things on its own and adapt to different situations. 3. Superintelligent AI 🤖 What It Is: Superintelligent AI would be smarter than any human in every way—smarter in thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and even emotions. It’s more advanced than General AI and is something that people are still imagining and debating about. Examples: Like General AI, Superintelligent AI doesn’t exist yet. It’s more of an idea or a possibility for the future. Why It’s Important: If it ever existed, Superintelligent AI could solve huge global problems, but it could also be risky because it would be more intelligent than humans, potentially making decisions we might not understand or control.
