Law enforcement agencies across the country are facing a crisis in recruiting and retention. As thousands of officers leave the profession, departments are betting on massive hiring bonuses to fill the gaps—but without addressing the root causes of why officers are leaving in the first place and why their recruitment numbers are dwindling. In my upcoming book, The Thinning Blue Line, I take a hard look at what I believe is one of the greatest public safety challenges of our time. I’ll share strategies for law enforcement leaders to modernize their recruiting efforts by updating messaging to appeal to a new generation, leveraging Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and more. I also delve into the issue of retention, highlighting where agencies fall short in providing the support, job satisfaction, and career growth that officers need to stay engaged—especially those with 5-10 years of experience, easily the group of LEOs I hear from the most about wanting to leave the law enforcement profession. Want exclusive previews of my book and a chance to win free services? Join my Reader’s List at WhittingtonBooks.com. **This is not the official cover of my book. That will be released soon!**

Interested in why employment law is such a passion? The following is the first question and answer from my recent "Lawyer Monthly" interview. Enjoy! Q: As an employment and labor law attorney with over 20 years of experience, could you share with us your journey into specializing in employment law and what inspired you to focus on this area? A: At the time I started practicing Labor and Employment, I was working as a Deputy City Attorney in San Francisco. The City Attorney’s office represents all departments and offers opportunities to practice in many different areas of law. I had been practicing litigation in the area of Code Enforcement where we worked with the community, using civil nuisance abatement tools to solve neighborhood problems. I did this for about nine years and felt that I wanted to expand my experience into a new area of law. Employment law has always interested me because of the human factor. I was a sociology major in college, and so the subject matter is fascinating to me. Every case is a story about how people interact in the workplace. Employment cases provide the opportunity to regularly consider how employment laws affect society on a bigger scale than just one case. Additionally, I had supervised a team of attorneys doing code enforcement, and I learned a lot about what it means to be a supervisor, and the challenges and opportunities that such a position brings. Those factors made me interested in practicing employment law. #Awardwinner #employmentlaw #Lawyeroftheyear #winners2023 #SanFrancisco #SanFranciscoLawyers #CAemploymentlaw

What keeps these in-house lawyers up at night? Great insight from Susan Lewis from Mutual of Omaha Erika Marabella from Rich Products Corporation and Kevin Smith from Pratt & Whitney. Unfortunately, the “Chatham House” rules applied! A special shout out to Stéphane Gaudet from Loranger Marcoux for doing an awesome job as moderator. Why I write about rural policing: because this still happens, mostly at small and rural agencies, and it's still wrong. Doing something poorly in the name of Better Than Nothing allows an unacceptable status quo to remain in place through inertia. Removing a bad, even mediocre, alternative will hurt. Pain can be a catalyst. The sheriffs advocating for this need an ethics check. This is 2024. If you cannot afford to do a thing well, then you cannot afford to do the thing. Make another plan.
Tell me how smart you are to even entertain this idea? Its one thing to hire a person and work them in admin. I hope there isn’t a Sheriff in NC that wants to swear in a person and deputize them without being trained.
