Many of us assume that technology adoption—and AI adoption, in particular, is a daunting process for older adults. We have this image of the struggling senior citizen, which clouds the product design process, often forcing a reluctance to push AI features within products for the aging population. This notion may have been valid at one point in time. Still, it’s likely an ageist assumption among the younger generation developing this tech, as research has shown that AI adoption is rapidly increasing for people aged 65+, with over half of this population in the U.S. being aware of ChatGPT. In reality, various applications of artificial intelligence can add convenience, access and companionship to senior care. As AI-based product leaders, we must prevent ourselves from assuming a lack of understanding of our aging users. Whether it be personalizing and simplifying medical care or mitigating social isolation, there are various ways in which artificial intelligence can be used to improve the lives of older adults; even some of the more abstract and complex implementations of AI can and should be seen within reach. AI can play a helpful role in assisting us through some of life’s most complex challenges, especially in health concerns faced by older adults.

In today’s world, there is pre-conception that the elderly either cannot use, or dislike using technology and the internet. Whilst that may have been true a decade ago, the same cannot be said for today. Reports from the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) show that in 2021 ‘70% of older adults made a new tech purchase’ and ‘75% of older adults use technology to stay socially connected’. Much like the younger generation many elderly use technology to stay in touch and for entertainment purposes. However, many older adults believe that modern technology isn’t inclusive enough, ‘citing poor user experiences and designs.’ To us this shows two things. That technology is being used by more and more people regardless of age. But that more accommodations need to be made to make accessing it easier for those who might struggle. And secondly that more relevance, accessibility and comfort must be built into such technology so that it does not exclude less experienced users. This is something we are working to achieve with ‘My Friend’. Along with an unbiased and supportive friend, and an easy to use User Interface that anyone will be able to navigate. Is AI the beginning of a new wave of support for family caregivers? 🤔 ☑ AI-powered sensors can monitor behavior, environmental changes, and vital signs without intruding on privacy, helping caregivers remotely track a loved one's well-being. ☑ AI can predict medical issues, allowing for early intervention and reducing the need for hospitalization. ☑ AI avatars can provide companionship, remind older adults of appointments and medications, and even offer empathetic responses. ☑ AI tools are helping caregivers understand and manage medical information, while AI-driven platforms create personalized care plans. While AI can enhance caregiving, it can't replace human judgment and requires careful human review. Still, there are lots of opportunities. Let us know what you think in the comments below! 💬 #familycaregiver #futureofcaregiving #caregivingsupport https://lnkd.in/eH748r35
