Key Insights: Industry Networks: There's a strong demand for a more connected industry and better information on grants, funding, and investment. Regional Investment: A significant need for dedicated investment in regional areas was identified, emphasizing the importance of professional and industry development outside metropolitan regions. Local Music Businesses: Most respondents are professional musicians, highlighting a shortage of music businesses to support our strong artist base. We’d like to add our voice to support our colleagues in France: considered by many as the world leader in cultural policy, where #Nantes – a city widely admired as a dynamic cultural hub – and the Pays de la Loire, proposes budget cuts of up to 100% to many esteemed cultural organisations. France has always led the way in cultural policy - being the first country to establish a collection society (SACEM), a Ministry of Culture (1961), and a network of provincial music offices (Le Pôle) to invest in talent. They have a cultural development bank. They created and put €80m into CNM - Centre national de la musique - essentially the first Ministry of Music in the world. Their research output is enormous, and they progressively tax more prominent players in the music ecosystem and direct that investment into the grassroots. That cuts of this scale can happen in France sets a worrying precedent. One of those organisations affected is Trempolino, one of Europe’s leading music hubs, as well as Le Nouveau Pavillon / Eurofonik which exists to promote often-sidelined contemporary traditional musics, as well as countless other organisations, artists and cultural professionals, not to mention the longterm implications for the public and cultural life at large in this entire region of France. As a systems engineer, I tend to see everything as a system. The Theory of Systems had a significant impact on both my professional and personal life. Today, my friend invited me to watch the Venezuelan Symphonic Orchestra perform in London next January. This reminded me of comparing an Orchestra System to a Video Technology Solution. An isolated instrument won’t deliver a symphony, just as an isolated service won’t deliver the best user experience. It’s the orchestra as a whole, the video platform as an integrated solution, that creates magic. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 / 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲 (𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵) A conductor orchestrates musicians to create harmony, and a video platform manages services like streaming, encoding, and content delivery to ensure a seamless user experience. 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 / 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 Each musician in an orchestra contributes a unique sound. Likewise, each service in a video platform, like user authentication or video recommendation, plays a crucial role in the overall performance. 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 / 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲/𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 The score guides the musicians, in the same way code and algorithms guide the platform, ensuring everything works in sync. 𝗥𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀 / 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 Before a concert, orchestras rehearse to perfect their performance. In tech, we run tests and debug to ensure the platform functions flawlessly. 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 / 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 A live performance is the ultimate test for an orchestra, just as the user experience is for a video platform. Everything comes together to deliver an amusing experience. ============== Whether in music or tech, success lies in the seamless integration of diverse elements, continuous feedback, and adaptation to the environment. I hope you enjoy this video, as much as I did: https://lnkd.in/eDUzuNYG

It's Filipino American History Month! Here's to those who came before... and paved the way. Read the overview from the post below from UP Alumni Association in America, Inc. PRO Lisa Boquiren.
October is Filipino American History Month (FAHM), as declared by the 103rd United States Congress in 2009. It commemorates the arrival on October 18, 1587 of the first Filipinos in the United States in the area now known as Morro Bay in California. Nearly 390 years after this arrival, another consequential event took place: the final eviction at the International Hotel (I-Hotel) on August 4, 1977, at 3:00 am, led by 400 riot police. Home to low income Filipino and Chinese seniors (and other residents), I-Hotel was located in a once-thriving area called Manilatown, which was then transformed by the city's initiatives. (The nearby Transamerica Pyramid was completed in 1972.) If history is indeed written by the victors, then perhaps music can be a way to remember, and retell. In this spirit, I invite you to take a listen to the instrumental piece I-Hotel at the 1:40:40 mark. It was composed by Art Khu and peformed by him (piano) with Ryoma Takenaga (bass) and Elé Salif Howell (drums) at Bird & Beckett Books & Records. A Filipino-American jazz pianist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and teacher, Art attended Yale School of Music and graduated from Oberlin Conservatory. #FAHM #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth #InternationalHotel #Manilatown

New Post: Is Elliot Grainge’s Atlantic Move Part of a Major Label Youthquake? - https://lnkd.in/gTdihY85 - For most of the last decade, three labels have dominated the U.S. recorded music business: Universal Music Group’s Republic and Interscope, and Warner Music Group’s Atlantic. So on Aug. 1, when Warner announced that as part of a management shakeup it had appointed Elliot Grainge as CEO of Atlantic Music Group, the move came as a surprise. Co-chairmen Julie Greenwald and Craig Kallman had led Atlantic for two decades, through the hardest years of the music business, to become two of the most respected executives in the industry. Now, after two years of declining market share, leadership will pass to a 30-year-old executive who comes from outside the major label system. Related A New Era: Inside Warner Music Group As Elliot Grainge Prepares to Take Charge of Atlantic 08/14/2024 Within a week, Greenwald, who had been elevated to chairman of Atlantic Music Group, announced that she plans to leave at the end of January. (Kallman, one of the all-time A&R greats, will stay on as CEO of Atlantic Records, under Grainge.) And the entire business seems to be wondering, What does this mean? It’s a big gamble for WMG CEO Robert Kyncl. Grainge, the son of UMG chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, has an impressive track record of success on a smaller scale, but not much on the kind of scale major labels usually operate. What’s going on? The obvious answer is that this is the acceleration of a youthquake in the music business. Streaming payouts are determined disproportionately by younger listeners who spend more time online. The industry’s top executives aren’t getting any younger, and the music business has never been much for succession planning. One industry executive I spoke with asked sarcastically if I thought Grainge was familiar with Ruth Brown, the R&B icon who had so many hits in the 1950s that Atlantic was nicknamed “the house that Ruth built,” in a nod to Yankee Stadium. I have no idea, but I also know that most young listeners don’t, so, as much as it pains me to say this, maybe that doesn’t matter so much. Greenwald is now regarded as an industry leader, but she wasn’t so much older than Grainge is now when she became president of Island Records in 2002. Grainge does seem to have a skill for identifying artists who are building an audience online and putting resources behind them in a smart way. Is his 10K Projects, which became part of WMG last year, a model for the label of the future? He hasn’t built the careers of any household-name superstars, which has been the traditional strength of the majors, t

The past weekend was the first DGTL festival of the year, in Amsterdam. Last year this time we (HyperCulture.nl) were commissioned by Bravoure to create the key visual and an array of visual assets for the DGTL 2024 festivals. The theme for 2024 is 'Synergy' — "The combined power of the collective. An exchange of energy, a mutual participation in a moment of liminality." After an extensive research and development phase we landed on a solution that felt like serendipity. https://lnkd.in/eXvhfjfU
