US-based Accelerating Circularity has announced a “commitment to action”, setting out pillars of an approach to be completed by March 2026 that will lay the groundwork for circular textiles systems.
The non-profit, launched in 2019, has been working on pilot projects to assess the feasibility and logistics underpinning the used textiles networks, publishing reports and working with manufacturers to build collaborative approaches.
It worked with textile firm Giotex, Canada-based used clothing collector Bank & Vogue, yarn manufacturer Parkdale Mills, Inc., denim mill Cone Denim and polyester yarn producer Unifi Manufacturing, Inc. (makers of REPREVE® ) to create products now sold at Target, with more expected to hit stores in the coming weeks.
Wrangler jeans from the reclaimed materials will soon be sold at Walmart.
Accelerating Circularity’s commitment involves: a target to recycle 325 tonnes of used textiles, including 150 tonnes of cotton, 100 tonnes of polyester and 75 tonnes of other fibres through partners; creating a used textile mapping platform that will outline the recycling ecosystem by pinpointing collectors, sorters, processors, recyclers, fibre producers, yarn spinners, fabric mills and product manufacturers that can repurpose used textiles into new fibres; and develop educational materials to help brands and consumers understand how to responsibly dispose of and recycle textiles.
Karla Magruder, founder of Accelerating Circularity, said: "Our work, amplified by the Clinton Global Initiative, will help us make a difference by reducing waste and pollution and promoting sustainability worldwide. We invite businesses, organisations and individuals to join us in this effort and help create a more sustainable future for textiles."
