The Inaugural National ICT Summit represents a transformative milestone in Uganda's digital transformation, aligning with key continental frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), and the African Union Digital Agenda (2020-2030). These initiatives aim to harness ICT infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth, regional integration, and enhanced global competitiveness. Uganda's expansion of the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) and development of e-government services, led by the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance and NITA-U, are essential for enhancing cross-border digital trade and improving market access under AfCFTA. Key developments include leveraging the EACOP fibre optic cable, which offers an alternative route to the Mombasa route, enhancing regional connectivity and ensuring redundancy for international internet traffic. Additionally, Uganda's integration of power infrastructure using optical ground wire (OPGW) fibre, led by UETCL, supports reliable power and data transmission across East Africa, further solidifying the nation's digital leadership. The ambitious undersea cable a private sector led project along the River Nile, in collaboration with regional governments, further enhances the Country’s role as a continental digital hub, providing a shorter route to the Global Internet Exchange Point (IXP). On the cybersecurity front, Uganda has established the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Security Operations Centre (SOC) through NITA-U to strengthen its response to cyber threats. Alongside this, the government’s data centres provide secure, centralized hosting for critical systems. In the regulatory sphere, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has also introduced a new licensing regime, promoting the participation of smaller ISPs to support last-mile connectivity in underserved areas. Regionally, Uganda’s ICT advancements contribute to the East African Community (EAC)’s goal of regional digital integration and serve as a model for other regions in Africa. The country's Digital Transformation Roadmap, cybersecurity laws, and Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) ensure data security, fostering a robust environment for cross-border transactions and foreign investment. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the visionary leadership of the ICT Association of Uganda (ICTAU) for convening key industry players at the Inaugural National ICT Summit. Their efforts have created a vital platform for collaboration and partnership, cementing Uganda’s position at the forefront of Africa’s digital future. This summit represents a significant step toward promoting inclusive and sustainable digital growth in Uganda and across the continent.
There has never been a greater time to hold a conversation about Uganda’s #DigitalTransformation amongst multiple industries of the economy. Today, as we mark day one of the #InauguralNationalICTSummit, the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the future of our ICT sector is great. The conversations so far have centred on how robust infrastructure and strategic collaboration between public and private sectors are not just enablers but the very foundation of our #EconomicCompetitiveness in the digital age. This summit provides a unique platform to bring together visionaries from across Africa to discuss the practical steps we can take to ensure Uganda remains at the forefront of the digital revolution. As the conversations continue, there is a growing sense of commitment to making Uganda a leader in digital innovation, ensuring we capitalise on the opportunities ahead. #ICTAUAt10 #NationalICTSummitUG #DigitalTransformation #EconomicCompetitiveness #ICTInnovation #PublicPrivatePartnership

🔻 Curious about what the DRC innovators are doing this week? 🔻 As our first ever DRC Innovation Bootcamp has unfolded here in Nairobi 🌍, we are excited to share a snapshot of yesterday's inspiring workshops and discussions. We kicked off with an engaging panel debate on how and why to innovate ⚙️ in the humanitarian context, bringing fruitful dialogue and diverse perspectives to the table. Our special guest from the Response Innovation Lab, Vanessa Mwangale, set the stage for the debate by introducing “The State of Humanitarian Innovation”. Benjamin Abunuasi gave his perspective as a refugee innovator, currently working with localised innovation at DRC. While Rahul Mitra, DRC Global Economic Recovery Advisor added, “In our field (humanitarian), innovation is not a luxury, it is a necessity”. But it would not be a workshop, if we did not have proper tools 🔧 in place in order for our participants to innovate. So, one of the key highlights of the day was the launch of the newly refined DRC Innovation Guide—a step-by-step toolkit that provides both a theoretical foundation for innovation in the humanitarian sector and practical guidance to strengthen our innovation programmes and processes. 💡 The first step?💡 Researching and defining your challenge. Together with the participants, we succeeded in breaking down barriers and setting the stage for an exciting Day 2 ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this journey of innovation! #CultureOfInnovation #DRCInnovation #Collaboration

Technology is best when it brings people together. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
