We've learnt a thing or two over the past few years whilst capturing six regions of New Zealand with LiDAR. High density LiDAR is not always the best option when you're after ground returns in dense bush. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation and precision in our projects. Our Land Survey team recently utilized state-of-the-art LIDAR technology to perform comprehensive survey work. Surveying a bridge rehabilitation project by drone to capture the 3 scans pictured: 1. LIDAR point cloud 2. Ground points only and 3. Flooding at an elevation of 608'. 🔍 What is LIDAR? LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an advanced remote sensing method that uses laser light to measure distances with exceptional accuracy. By emitting laser pulses and measuring the time it takes for them to return after hitting an object, LIDAR creates highly detailed 3D maps of the surveyed area. Our ability to deliver detailed, accurate, and timely data not only enhances the quality of our projects but also exemplifies our commitment to leveraging innovative technologies. Two data products have been created from the 2022 LiDAR and are available on the RIGIS Hub. The first data product is the Shaded Relief Lidar (2022) and the second is a Shaded Relief Lidar (2022) Dynamic Range Adjustment (DRA). The Shaded Relief Lidar is an imagery layer of the hillshade rendition of the hydro-flattened, continuous bare earth surface (excluding trees, buildings, and manmade structures), raster-formatted, high-resolution (1ft) Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The Shaded Relief Lidar (2022) DRA is a shaded relief map image service based on a bare earth DEM from the 2022 Spring Lidar and was created by Paul Jordan at RIDEM. This service uses the Dynamic Range Adjustment feature to symbolize the data. The feature automatically adjusts your active stretch type as you navigate around your image based on the pixel values in your current display. RIGIS has created a simple swipe application to easily compare the two renditions of the data. The data, and the swipe tool, can be found on the 2022 Rhode Island Statewide Lidar Data Project section of the RIGIS Hub. https://lnkd.in/evyht5D8

🌟 Discovering LiDAR Returns 🌟 Curious about how LiDAR captures precise building heights? Let's unravel the science behind "returns"! Imagine a high-tech flashlight rapidly emitting light beams. These "pulses" strike objects in the environment – trees, buildings, even the ground – and bounce back to the LiDAR system, forming what we call "LiDAR returns." ➡️ First Return: This initial bounce is paramount, revealing the highest point hit by the laser pulse, such as a tree's canopy or a building's roof. ➡️ Multiple Returns: Occasionally, a single pulse generates multiple "bounces," unveiling hidden details like branches within a forest canopy or power lines. ➡️ Last Return: Typically indicating ground level, yet if obstructed, the last return might originate from the obstacle itself, such as a thick branch. Embark on a journey to understand LiDAR technology and its role in mapping our world! Got inference working with Myria3D on French HD lidar data. Results are... disappointing but that is okay and is irrelevant for this exercise! Check out Myria3D here: https://lnkd.in/dKMnw-Xc I changed the model from the default to another from the Myria3D model zoo after seeing no change in lidar point classifications. This is a default setting, as it turns out - predicted probabilities will be output to a new lidar channel. Once you change that, it will be much easier to visualize the changes. Let's go back to the default model and see if that is any better than this one...
