Been saying this for years. But to do this, we need an increased measure of patience and the ability to communicate at fundamental levels. You will never get anywhere without directly addressing the Curse of Knowledge, which is a major bias we all have, particularly in advanced science disciplines. This is why I wrote #SubatomicWriting: Six Fundamental Lessons to Make Language Matter from Hopkins Press. The most fruitful times in physics were when physicists communicated with each other and with the public.
For this reason, Michael Faraday is absolutely one of my favorite physicists. He explored the interconnectedness of physics, chemistry, and engineering, pioneering entirely new ways of thinking about electricity and magnetism. AND he spent time communicating these things to the public, in popular Christmas lectures which inspired others and allowed his colleagues to build on his work. I would encourage anyone interested in making a difference to read Subatomic Writing over the holiday season. Let it wash over you, get inspired by all you can do to improve, and start thinking about your audience more as you write. ✍️
We have a bajillion people participating in lectures and science conferences now, but most presenters are interested in making themselves seem smart by talking over the heads of the listeners. This is not communication. It's just an ego trip in siloed echo chambers.
Learn how to build from simple definitions first, use metaphors, build new information on old information, use mnemonics and humor to help people remember your information. It's about them, not you. Academia has forgotten this, and it's the reason so many Americans have turned away from reason. They're tired of being left out of the conversation by the way we're communicating.
We have the opportunity now to relearn how to write and communicate intelligibly . . . not intellectually . . . if we are to progress.
