During this Giving season and this winter season, the problem of young people at-risk of homelessness is serious. Across the US there are more than 4,000,000 young people under the age of 25 without homes. In Georgia alone the number is more than 35,000. Youth homelessness is a prevalent issue facing the communities we serve throughout NW GA. The reasons for youth homelessness are many: difficult family situations, poverty, family violence, drugs and others. At Advocates, we are working hard along with community partners to address this issue for young people. Through our Flowering Branch Children’s Shelter, and our RISE Youth Independent Housing Program, we are providing housing for more than 180 young people in our communities who were previously at-risk of homelessness. Eighty percent of the young people who compete these programs achieve housing stability and independence. This Giving Tuesday your support for youth who are at-risk of homelessness will help even more leave the streets and find housing stability and independence. We cannot do this without you, please donate today. https://lnkd.in/eGt3KDMG #givingtuesday #youthhomelessness #advocatesforchildren

LAHSA has announced The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. It will be from January 23rd thru January 25th. It will cover LA County with a few exceptions where they are conducting their own counts. In their own words: "We count to help the thousands of men, women, and families that are sleeping without a permanent home across Los Angeles County every night. The data collected is an essential component in understanding the scope and nature of homelessness in Los Angeles County and helps LAHSA and its partners deliver services where they are needed most. Homelessness is a humanitarian crisis that takes the support of our entire community to end." Last week, the Government published the latest stats on homelessness. They revealed… 358,370 households sought help after being threatened with homelessness or losing their home, an increase of more than 10% in a year. Of these, over 90% were assessed as homeless (324,990 households). Households living in temporary accommodation hit their highest point since records began, increasing 12.3% since last year. 3,898 people were counted as sleeping rough across England on a single night in autumn 2023, more than double the number in 2010. Closer to home, the number of households that were owed a support duty to relieve or prevent homelessness increased by 30% in Rochdale and 15% in Bury. Today is World Homeless Day. If this post shocked you, here’s how to help: ➡ Share this post to help more people understand the scale of homelessness in England ➡ Donate to Petrus and help us do what we can for homeless people https://ow.ly/oLUw50THMAR #WorldHomelessDay #Homelessness

As reported by the National Center for Homeless Education, more than 1.2 million children nationwide experienced homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year—exceeding the total number of children in 28 states. This figure includes children living in shelters, unsheltered environments such as cars or tents, or staying in overcrowded housing arrangements (doubled-up with friends or family). As troubling as this statistic is, sadly, the 1.2 million figure is likely an undercount, as it does not include younger-than-school-age children experiencing homelessness, and an estimated 300,000 school-age children are missed in the count of school-age children experiencing homelessness. Family homelessness is a growing social problem affecting families in every state. Nationwide, 85% of providers have seen family homelessness increase in recent years. Family homelessness accounts for 37% of the overall homeless population and 50% of the sheltered population. Housing is essential to ending homelessness, but it is not sufficient. Families need basic supports beyond decent affordable housing to thrive: food, education, employment, child care, transportation, health and mental health care, trauma-informed care, and children’s services. More than 90% of providers agree that services are necessary for families to remain stably housed, and that services need to be provided as soon as families become homeless and continue after they are permanently housed. Help us support these families by donating directly to Winter Walk as we continue our mission to end homelessness for good! #morecommonthanyouthink #endhomelessness #endthestigma #dontwalkby #winterwalk 📃 Source: The Bassuk Center on Homeless and Vulnerable Children & Youth Donate: https://lnkd.in/eEz2r_PK

Our communities are experiencing a crisis of youth and young adult homelessness. But we have evidence that progress is possible. A new report, released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA, shows that focused and sustained partnerships between state and federal agencies, nonprofit partners, and philanthropy have moved the needle on youth homelessness in Washington state. It's clear we have much work left to do, but this report affirms the need to deepen our commitment to this work. Supporting our youth today lays the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future, enabling them to reach their potential and enrich our communities. https://lnkd.in/gu-b_pBk

Criminalizing poverty… The Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban on homeless residents sleeping outdoors is deeply troubling and will have far-reaching consequences across the nation. This ban criminalizes the act of being homeless. Local laws now impose fines and potential jail time for individuals sleeping in public spaces, whether on the streets or in their cars, using as little as a blanket for warmth or a rolled-up shirt as a pillow. Such measures punish those who are already vulnerable and marginalized. This is unconstitutional and fundamentally unjust. Why This Matters Now? During the election year, the policies we advocate for will shape the future of our communities. We must unite and amplify our voices to demand humane and effective solutions to end homelessness. How can you help today? 1. Stay Informed: Understand the implications of the Supreme Court decision. 2. Advocate for Change: Urge your local representatives to oppose policies that criminalize homelessness and support bills providing housing and essential services. 3. Join Our Efforts: Participate in Winter Walk events and campaigns. Together, we can make a powerful statement that homelessness requires compassionate and effective solutions, not punitive measures. This is a moment we cannot walk by. It is in our hands to fight for justice, dignity, and the fundamental rights of every individual, regardless of their housing status. Your support and advocacy are crucial. Thank you for your continued commitment to ending homelessness. Together, we can make a difference. In hope and partnership, Paulina & the Winter Walk Team Together, hand in hand, we have the power to create a meaningful change. Let's stand united in this vital mission. Your donation today lights the way towards a brighter, fairer world where every individual finds solace and shelter. Donate today!: https://lnkd.in/eEz2r_PK

Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson. The case aims to determine whether local governments can make it a crime for someone to live outside and unsheltered if they have no home. As this hotly contested case makes clear, the problem of homelessness is getting worse. Every year, more and more Americans experience homelessness—and cities and communities increasingly struggle to bring the crisis under control. What can we do? That’s a complicated question. But at SVDP, we believe the first (and best) solution is homelessness prevention: directing life-saving resources to people on the brink of homelessness.
