Over the past year, we’ve experienced an astonishing 112% increase in demand at the Oakland Food Pantry. Yes, you read that correctly. Four years after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains: what is driving this significant rise? Two years ago, we saw a surge in need following the reduction of SNAP benefits, but this past year, the impact has been compounded by other economic factors. The cost of living has skyrocketed, especially when it comes to groceries. In Pennsylvania, food prices have surged by an average of 8.2%. Consider the following: a gallon of milk now costs $4.56, a loaf of bread is priced at $3.21, eggs are nearing $4 a dozen, and chicken is approximately $5 per pound. Even for those who budget carefully, a week's worth of groceries for a family of four can easily surpass $100. The result? Supplemental services, like food pantries, have become a lifeline for more individuals than ever before. Food insecurity is no longer confined to the unemployed, elderly, or disabled—it’s affecting a much broader spectrum of people, many of whom were self-sufficient just two years ago. This growing need underscores the importance of community support during these challenging times, for this, I am so thankful for the work my team does every week at Community Human Services!
Our Food Pantry provided essential support to 5,873 unduplicated individuals this past fiscal year—a remarkable 112% increase from the previous year! Operating just 10 hours a week, our dedicated team and incredible volunteers served up to 800 individuals and families, offering various nutritious options, including fresh fruits and vegetables, non-perishable items, dairy products, and meat or fish. A heartfelt thank you to our partners, McAuley Ministries, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, UPMC Presbyterian, and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, for their unwavering support in helping us assist our neighbors facing food insecurity. Interested in supporting our Pantry? Consider attending our annual fundraiser, The Big Share, this fall. Tickets will go on sale this Monday!

Feeding 105,000 people every week is no small feat. But for Eric Cooper, CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, it’s about more than meals—it’s about solving hunger at its roots. In this Ensemble Texas episode, we’re pulling back the curtain on the incredible work of the San Antonio Food Bank—how they address hunger today while creating solutions for tomorrow. Eric shares the strategies that make this possible, from food rescue to workforce development, and even the ways food can heal more than just empty stomachs. But there’s more to this story than logistics. We’re talking about why most people in those food lines are working families—moms who are employed but underpaid, making tough choices like whether to pay for groceries or rent. Learn why Eric believes hunger is ultimately solvable—and how the San Antonio Food Bank’s mission goes beyond putting food on the table for families today, to building a resilient, thriving community for all. Yea it’s a five minute video, who watches those anymore! However, if you followed us over the course of Serve Week 2024 (The Ocho) this is an awesome wrap up and great work by the team. We try and use LinkedIn to open a window into our culture. And while Foundry Commercial isn’t perfect and we will always have work to do in pursuit of our standards, I think this is one of the things we get really right. We are a services company and spending time with these amazing organizations, which we encourage you to check out and support, reminds us what true service looks like. It is a week where we try to give back and we always end up getting so much more than we give. Great job Lauren and the entire Serve Week support team. #foundrycommercial #itspersonal #theocho #serveweek2024

Eimer Stahl’s three offices once again came together for the firm’s annual holiday food bank fundraiser, supporting three essential organizations: Greater Chicago Food Depository, Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. Our contributions help to provide meaningful support to these organizations that play a critical role in the fight against hunger. - Greater Chicago Food Depository provided 101 million meals last year to those in need across Chicago and Cook County, where one in five households is experiencing inadequate food. - Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin distributes more than 20 million pounds of food annually, supporting the more than 600,000 people in Wisconsin experiencing hunger. - Second Harvest of Silicon Valley serves as a vital lifeline, providing meals to 500,000 people every month. We’re honored to support the vital work they do in the communities where we live and work.

Food security remains a huge issue in New York City, especially as food costs have skyrocketed over the last several years. Unfortunately, many Brooklynites do not always know where their next meal will come from. At BCS, we’re working to feed Brooklyn with our New York Food for New York Families program. We also explore this issue further in our new blog post, which goes live later this week! Foundation is matching the first $250,000 donated online to ACCFB by community members like you, so double your impact with a matched gift today: https://bit.ly/3ZJCVFS How much we raise before the end of the year determines just how much we can do in 2025. In addition to providing an estimated 60 million pounds of food in 2025, here's a few of the other things we plan to do: 🥕 Expand our food recovery efforts to ensure high-quality surplus food from local farmers and grocery stores lands on the tables of people in our community instead of in landfills 🍊 Improve community health through our innovative Food as Medicine program supporting patients with chronic conditions that benefit from fresh, organic produce and meals tailored to individual needs 🌱 Invest in local food systems by partnering with BIPOC farmers, food distributors, local businesses and more to support the local economy, reduce our environmental impact, and provide more fresh food to our community 📣 Advocate for food justice by engaging further in community organizing to fight for policies addressing the root causes of hunger
