Not your average LinkedIn post but maybe that makes it actually better to share here than in my Instagram bubble? People say we are living in the Hunger Games and it’s scary how accurate this comparison is, seeing celebrities at the MET gala while Israel bombs and invades Rafah where refugees are too starved to flee the Israeli violence yet again. But it’s not just about the celebrities that could do so much more with all their fame and wealth (thank you Macklemore for showing what they could be doing instead). It’s also everyone else, all of us in a safe and privileged place allowing our government, universities and institutions to continue allowing Israel to basically wipe out Gaza. Many times this week I wondered: How do people go on with their daily life as if nothing is happening? But most of all I wondered: how do I? I feel so inspired by the brave students and staff in the US and now also in the Netherlands who are refusing to remain complicit. I couldn’t stop watching the news and the videos, especially as things escalated when pro-Israel counter-protesters came in with torches and riot police starting beating in on the student protesters leading to bloody headwounds. What world are we living in? How on earth is such violence being used against the people who are asking to stop the horrific violence in Gaza? And all the right-wing and extreme-right politicians suddenly caring about anti-semitism and trying to delegitimize the protests with that, completely dismissing all the Jewish activists standing up for Palestine. I am privileged to have a job fighting for justice - and climate justice is related to justice for Palestine as well as standing up against police violence. But this week it felt unimportant and like a wrong kind of escapism. People are saying this is like the Vietnam war protests, the time to stand up, speak up and actually disrupt normal life because there is nothing normal about 40,000 people killed, 80% of buildings demolished, mass graves, doctors tortured to death, and this all with the financial, military and political support from many Western countries and institutions. This week I found myself wanting to be in Amsterdam for the protests to at least feel like I was doing something because shouldn’t we all be doing something? Not everyone is a protest person and I for sure am not cut out for direct action or confrontational situations but I believe everyone can contribute in a way that fits them. I am still processing and figuring out what this looks like for me but I guess writing some of this out is a first step. If you are also trying to figure it out feel free to message me and maybe we can figure it out together. In the meantime some easy things to do are: inform yourself, donate to Palestinian organisations like Plant an Olive Tree, join the Nakba day protest on Saturday in Amsterdam. https://lnkd.in/e-eYnYMu

Figures released by the British Hallmarking Council in January, show that there was an increase in demand for articles made of 999 silver, gold and platinum in 2023. Across all four UK Assay Offices (The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office, Birmingham Assay Office, Sheffield Assay Office, EDINBURGH ASSAY OFFICE) a total of 8,020,089 articles were marked, of which 4,144,620 were silver, 3,515,075 were gold, 356,325 were platinum, and 4,069 were palladium. Despite an overall year-on-year decrease in volume of articles submitted for hallmarking (-17.7%) there were strong increases in the number of items marked that were made of 999 silver (+23.8%), 999 gold (+24.6%), and 999 platinum (+17.2%). https://lnkd.in/eXw-SFzg

The Mayor of Aradippou, Christodoulos Partou, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Athlin Foundation, in the presence of the Municipal Secretary, Matthaios Alampritis, which also includes the hosting of the Athlin Sports Library in the Municipality of Aradippou. The Founders, Effie Zikouli and Miranda Evangelidou, thanked the Mayor for his kind cooperation and expressed their gratitude to the Municipal Council for unanimously supporting the action. In the first year, a space in the heart of the Municipality, at Apostolou Loukas Square, will be allocated for the hosting of the Foundation with the aim of developing cognitive sports. The space will be designed to meet the needs of the library’s operation, while there will be display cases with unique exhibits that will intellectually travel citizens in sport events around the world. #Athlin #AthlinFoundation #SportsDifferently #Aradippou

The rules for disqualification need to be re-examined. At the time Vinesh Phogat competed in and won the Semi Finals, she was below the benchmark weight of 50 kg. Any subsequent disqualification should not affect the victories she achieved while she was within the required weight range. Therefore, she should at least be awarded a Silver Medal. I hope the Appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) results in an equitable decision, considering all the relevant circumstances. While I firmly believe she deserves the Gold Medal, even a strict interpretation of the rules supports her retaining her victories. If you have a different opinion, please feel free to comment.
