What image comes up when you hear “innovation lab”? Likely: White coat. Goggles. Cutting-edge stuff, like some of these notable innovation labs that have recently emerged: ⚽️Major League Soccer has a “pioneering” one. (The NBA’s 76ers have one, too.) 🍫Mars invested $70m to “[increase] the speed of innovation” on brands like M&M’s and Snickers. 🍑Even the state of Georgia is jumping on the bandwagon with its own “controlled sandbox environment.” As brand after brand flocks to build the next innovation lab, it all begs the question: Has the title lost its moxie? Given that a whopping 90% of so-called innovation labs fail to deliver on their promises, it's worth a closer look.

AI creates business opportunities - Inspiring success story! Small Mexican startup Someone Somewhere that works with hundreds of rural artisans to apply traditional handcrafts on clothing and accessories got a deal with Adidas thanks to AI idea visualization and the power of social media. During its early days, Someone Somewhere was able to secure partnerships with some bigger businesses, including Rappi and Ben & Frank, however, in 2023 founders recognized that they could leverage AI to help the business grow even more. They started creating AI-assisted conceptions of well-known products by feeding their databases of all the different materials and techniques the craftspeople employed into Stable Diffusion's model. "Show companies how some of their most iconic items could look if they were made with artisans from different regions" was the stated goal of the project. They posted some concepts on sites like LinkedIn, tagging the companies. Their concept of an Adidas-branded Mexican National Team soccer jersey went viral and changed their business forever. On June 21, the companies announced the new collection of Mexican National Team jerseys, hand-embroidered by women artisans from the Sierra Norte of Puebla, Mexico. The obsession with "innovation" in food is a recipe for disaster. Food has always been about experimentation! So don't pressurize yourself for revolutionary new products or new innovations! Instead focus on what truly matters - the consumer experience. Stop chasing technological gimmicks.  As a startup, focus on playing with textures, flavors, and branding.  A simple tweak to how a familiar food feels in your mouth or a surprising flavor combination can create a whole new way to enjoy it. It's about perception, not reinvention. Let's make the most of what we have by taking existing products and turning them into exciting experiences.  Who needs complication when you can make a splash with clever reinvention? The legacy agency model is being challenged. This presents an opportunity to rethink what external creative support looks like and provides. I believe organizations will still need external creative support, specifically in building their own content studios.
