Tasked with a mission of national importance, our goal was to revamp the building's electrical infrastructure, ensuring it met the high standards required for its critical communication and UPS functions. The challenge was to implement a comprehensive solution that guaranteed precision, reliability, and security, all while adhering to stringent military standards. Our approach? A bespoke solution designed to meet the unique demands of a military communications facility. This included installing advanced containment systems both above and below the floor and establishing robust power supplies and distribution equipment crucial for uninterrupted operations. The execution of this project, under the strict conditions required for security and operational readiness, highlights our expertise and commitment to excellence. The result is a state-of-the-art electrical infrastructure that significantly enhances the communication capabilities of Building 1086, ensuring maximum operational readiness for RAF Lakenheath. Sweco has been awarded a four-year framework agreement worth approximately 21 million euros by the Danish Ministry of Defence Estate Agency (MDEA). In this assignment, Sweco will be solely responsible for providing strategic consultancy in the construction, maintenance, development and sustainability of military operative properties across Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The MDEA “Forsvarsministeriets Ejendomsstyrelse” manages and expands military facilities such as barracks, naval bases, air force stations, shooting ranges, training grounds and other property on behalf of the Danish Armed Forces. It is also responsible for the environment and energy agenda for the entire Ministry of Defence’s area of authority. “We are delighted to contribute to this important societal task — to upgrade and further develop the physical framework for the Danish Ministry of Defence. We were selected because of our cross-cutting perspective in solving tasks. Our strength at Sweco comprises our many skills as well as our ability to bring them into play in interdisciplinary advisory services from technical to strategic levels. With that approach, we look forward to supporting the MDEA for the next four years,” says Dariush Rezai, Business Area President for Sweco in Denmark. This is the first time that the MDEA has entered a strategic collaboration with one single advisor. The assignment started in May 2024 and will continue for four years with an expected budget of DKK 160 million and a maximum limit of DKK 240 million. Did you know the US Army Corps of Engineers has projects in Norway? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District is working closely with U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency (Forsvarsbygg) and the U.S. Embassy Oslo to deliver roughly $200 million in planned projects at the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s Rygge Air Station in Norway! The projects are funded through the U.S. European Command's European Deterrence Initiative using U.S. Air Force military construction funds. In addition to facilitating interoperability and training, the projects aim to enhance the readiness of Rygge Air Station to support the capability of U.S. forces, Norwegian forces, NATO Allies, and partners to rapidly respond to any situation in the region should the need arise. An interesting article to read for those in defence procurement in Canada. Don’t get bogged down by the US terminology and scale, instead focus on the similar process problems and outcomes… then think about the scaled solution. To not lose the next war, or perhaps even to prevent it, is to drastically rethink the way we do defence procurement and manage military capabilities.
