D&AD's Wednesday session kicks off with a fascinating chat between DDB’s president and global CCO Chaka Sobhani, president of this year’s film jury, and Noam Murro, the iconic Biscuit Filmworks director. A frank and honest conversation about feelings in film and how to make work that moves us. Some of the key takeaways from Murro included: · It doesn’t matter what you shoot on – do you, as a viewer ever look at any piece of content and wonder what it was shot on? · Craft is important, but it’s about the clarity of the idea · Nothing good will result from bad writing – it’s key to protect the writer. Don’t let it get changed a thousand times, but if you protect it you can have something great in the end. · Choose a script from its potential – and involve everybody in the process, including the client · Don’t sell a piece of music before you shoot – you might end up using a $30 song rather than a million-dollar track. Music can be great for inspiration, but the final piece of music has to work with whatever you shot. · Inspiration for stories can come from anyone you meet · Stick to what you’re good at – it’s not that complicated. #DandADFestival #Creativity #ChakaSobhani https://lnkd.in/gvxVcU8

I spent the last couple days attending Calgary Arts Development ‘s free, Living a Creative Life Congress. These are some of the things I enjoyed about it: -Free dinner, lunch, drinks and snacks. -The venue, Calgary Public Library is such a beautiful building. -Meeting friendly, art loving people. -Seeing friends and acquaintances from Calgary’s art sector. -Chris Gamble’s clown performance. -The breakout session where we discussed how artists can be agents for social change. -The effort to be inclusive. -Discovered a couple interesting arts organizations. This CADA run initiative was not a “how to” seminar and it wasn’t a gathering to address the issues artists face. What it seemed to be, is a place to celebrate being creative. Whether you’re a hobbyist, a professional artist, a “creative” or an arts administrator. CADA is a government funded organization and so they must try and be all inclusive. They are succeeding it that category. If you consider yourself creative, or work for an organization that focuses on creatives, then there is space for you. And for better or for worse, that’s how it should be. Everyone seems to agree that art is a vital part of any civil society. I would suggest we establish another congress to address the issue of “How to help artists survive as artists”. #lclyyc #lifeasanartist #yycarts #focusedonmusic #yycmusic #yycwriters #businessandart #artistvscreative #art4artsake

FOCUS 2024 kicks off with a booming start It’s that time again! FOCUS London 2024 is back at the Business Design Centre for their two day event of networking, poignant panel discussions led by the top voices of the screen industry, and the gathering of thousands of professionals ready to make connections and make things happen. Day 1 Highlights: Day one puts the next generation of screen professionals in the spotlight. TV presenter-turned-founder Sarah Beeny (Stokeford Studios) and producer Jason Solomons discuss how young creatives are redefining the industry, breaking away from traditional hubs like London to build innovative spaces and opportunities in regions like Manchester, Cardiff, and beyond. With 2025 on the horizon, these conversations are more vital than ever, as industries like film, gaming, advertising, and television increasingly converge, driving fresh perspectives and cross-disciplinary knowledge. Today’s top content creators, like the Sidemen and Monet McMichael, excel at authenticity, thriving on platforms like TikTok and YouTube by understanding their audiences. Now, they’re sharing their expertise with traditional filmmaking, as discussed in a Film London panel featuring Jennifer Byrne and Liv West. The event has expanded significantly, with new exhibitors like Kazakhstan and Barbados, packed panels, and TED-style "In Brief" sessions on industry insights. Technology takes center stage, covering AI, VFX, and sustainable innovations, including a Gladiator II case study on cross-border filming and post-production in Malta, Morocco, and the UK. British Film Commission chief executive Adrian Wootton OBE chairs the conversation between Aidan Elliott (executive producer) and Christian McWilliams (supervising location manager) and Louise Hussey (executive vfx producer, Industrial Light and Magic London) as they discuss working on location in Malta, Morocco and the UK, working on post and vfx in the latter, and other cross border collaborative experiences. We’re part of your future planning, because of what we provide.’” Where Art Meets Impact is produced in collaboration with Voices of the Community and the Bay Area Video Coalition, bringing you highlights from our 2nd annual CA Arts & Culture Summit: Art Work is Real Work. Last week we joined the ADCE - Art Directors Club of Europe Festival in Barcelona, to share how creativity can use as a forced for good and support solutions for climate action. 🌎 The creative industries is full of brilliant and passionate creatives who have the right skillsets to drive industry transformation, but our traditional education system is failing them. It's why, we're building new pathways, aligning with how creatives want to learn. We piloted our new workshop on Anti-Greenwashing and Sustainability Marketing Strategies with industry professionals, and will share more soon about how you can up-skill and use your creativity for good. 👀 Stay tuned! #Workshop #ADCEFestival #Barcelona #CreativityForGood

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Being free is not the same as being welcoming. Some free and low-admission organizations treat their admission strategy as the near-entirety of their audience expansion efforts. However, free admission organizations do not have notably different audiences than paid-admission organizations. Just because something is free doesn’t mean people who don’t have interest (perhaps because they feel unwelcome) will do it. We see time and time again that free admission is not a foolproof audience expansion strategy with reliably positive impacts on welcoming perceptions. Being perceived as welcoming requires strategy, effort, thoughtful programing, prioritization and – often – investment. It’s not as simple as putting a ‘free’ sign on the door.” From “Cost and Value: Are Museum & Performing Arts Tickets Worth It?” by Colleen Dilenschneider [subscription required to read] https://lnkd.in/eS5EF7p5 #SweibelArts #Ticketing #AudienceStrategy
