❗ #Vanuatu #Earthquake ❗ "I’ve been through earthquakes before, but this is the worst. Everyone has been affected. Three of us hid under the table as the earth shook violently underneath us." Our colleague Carol Angir is in Port Vila, Vanuatu right now and she shared with us what it was like when the earthquake hit. Despite the whole ActionAid Vanuatu team being impacted, they are immediately taking action to support the local community with urgent needs such as clean water, food and dignity kits. https://lnkd.in/gAdvCf_H

🚨#Vanuatu: a magnitude-7.3 earthquake and aftershocks have affected 80,000 people (23% of Vanuatu's population), including 14,000 children. On 17 December, the earthquake struck near Port Vila, Vanuatu's capital, causing widespread structural damage, including the collapse of buildings and bridges, and triggering landslides that further obstruct rescue efforts. An earthquake-induced power outage has damaged submarine internet cable equipment, leading to a severe acid leakage and potential ecological disaster. 🔗New analysis on the current situation and anticipated impacts: https://lnkd.in/e3rWfhTD #HumanitarianAid #EmergencyResponse #Humanitariancrisis #NeedsAnalysis

Yes, Nepal is one of the world's most disaster prone countries. But earthquakes do not have to claim lives and reduce homes to rubble. Build up Nepal's #ECO2Bricks save lives. They are safer, cheaper and greener to build with than other common construction materials, including fired bricks. Don't just take our word for it, hear from survivors of last year's earthquake, whose families were kept safe and whose homes were undamaged. We can, and must, #buildbackbetter. 💚 https://lnkd.in/df48Am42

**A 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Vanuatu** A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck near Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, causing widespread destruction. Landslides, crushed vehicles, and flattened buildings— including a complex housing multiple western embassies—are among the early reported damages. Power and mobile networks across the country are down, complicating relief efforts. While the full extent of the destruction remains unclear, there are unconfirmed reports of at least one fatality. Dan McGarry, a journalist in Port Vila, described the scene outside the local hospital's emergency department, where he witnessed *“several people who were visibly, seriously injured.”* He noted that this quake felt like *“the biggest one... in more than 20 years.”* Vanuatu, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is no stranger to seismic activity, but the scale of this event has shocked the island nation. Our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu as they face this tragedy and begin the difficult path to recovery. #Vanuatu #Earthquake #DisasterRelief #PacificRegion
