Data brokers play a significant role in perpetuating inequity in employment and fair housing initiatives by selling personal data of people with incarceration histories. This digital footprint, including incarceration history, can hinder access to housing, jobs, and more. Fair Chance/Second Chance expungement initiatives are crucial, but addressing the digital shadow is equally important to combat algorithmic barriers since courthouses aren't supplying conviction history information - prison tech is. And it isn't regulated. If we could fix this for people with incarceration histories, we could improve data privacy for everyone.
