This holiday season, I was reminded of how old traditions can take on new life, often in the most unexpected ways. For 30 years, a quirky family tradition involving regifting some rather tacky butterfly magnets has brought laughter and connection to my ex-husband’s family. Each year, someone passes the butterflies along, and the next recipient gets the joy (or the burden!) of holding onto them until they can regift them again the following Christmas. When we divorced, I thought I had said goodbye to that tradition, but life has a funny way of coming full circle. This year, as we celebrated together as one family, I became the lucky recipient of one of those infamous butterflies. It was a small but poignant reminder of how love, humor, and shared traditions keep us connected, even as life evolves. In HR, we often talk about the power of traditions in building strong teams and cultures. Like that butterfly magnet, traditions can anchor us, create continuity, and spark joy ~ even in ways we don’t anticipate. Whether it's a shared laugh, a collective challenge, or a long-standing ritual, these moments strengthen our bonds, build resilience, and remind us that we’re all in this together. As we prepare to close 2024 and look ahead to 2025, I’m thinking about how we can carry forward the best parts of our traditions while leaving space for new ones to emerge. What will we bring with us into the new year to strengthen our teams, our families, and our communities? How can we honor the past while embracing new opportunities? Here’s to a 2025 filled with connection, growth, and the courage to embrace whatever butterflies (tacky or otherwise) might come our way. It is through the course of life, that we might lose this. And then, if we are wise, we do the work to find it again and to come back home. What does this image represent to you? To me, it says so much, but here are three to start: 1️⃣ Enoughness: We can see ourselves as perfect, complete, and whole - on the left... Or as all that we are not - on the right. 2️⃣ Community: We are I, but to fill life up, it's beautiful to be in relation with others. Perfect Timing: Week 26 Are you chasing butterflies? Those beautiful, delicate creatures that dance on the breeze, drawn to the vibrant allure of flowers. They captivate us with their grace and color, but their presence is fleeting, their connections shallow. People butterflies are much the same—drawn to the surface, captivated by the moment, but unable to connect on a deeper, more meaningful level. Now, consider the alternative: the solid people. Imagine a world where we seek out the solid people in our lives, the ones who are like trees. Trees stand tall and strong, their roots delving deep into the earth, providing a foundation of stability and growth. These people are grounded, reliable, and capable of forming deep, lasting connections. They understand the value of love that goes beyond the surface, love that is rooted in trust, respect, and mutual support. Solid people lift us up. They are the ones who stand by us through life’s storms, who provide shade and shelter in times of need. They don’t flutter away when things get tough; they remain steadfast, offering their strength and support. They nurture us, help us grow, and stand as pillars of stability in an ever-changing world. Imagine being surrounded by such people. Imagine being such a person where you value deep connections over fleeting encounters, where you prioritize lasting relationships over momentary attractions.
