A seed-stage hiring mistake that always spells disaster - Hiring mid-level people to do a job you don't understand. Ignore this warning at your peril. If you've never marketed your own project before, you shouldn't be hiring a marketer. If you haven't figured out how to get users, partners or customers, you shouldn't be hiring for GTM. And if you don't know anything about how to run an engineering organization, you shouldn't be hiring an engineering manager. You, as the founder, are the "chef" of your organization. The recipe is your responsibility. There are only two viable options to build out your early-stage execution: Option 1. Figure out how to do the job successfully yourself, and then delegate it Option 2. Hire someone very senior who's executed Option 1 before and knows how to do it again Anything else and you might as well set those millions of dollars in VC funding on fire and go home. I prefer no nonsense. So let us get to it 😎 SaaS? 1-2 years as BDR? Promoted and then 1-2 years as AE? Got some hard knocks too? Got a heart? But hungry as hell? (don't mean food) Alas -- youngest in the ranks gets you the shitty leads in saturated markets or sundown companies. Or manager not appreciating your input? Just want to grow faster? Learn from the best? Yup, time to switch. 🤜 See -- we are are hiring an entire team in Amsterdam (NL speaking). See the world and join an insanely fast growing AI company. Profitable. No VCs or runways. Mostly fun.. Amazing 'culture' (well talk is cheap so double check with the gang) 😅 Moreover just fantastic people doing what we feel is good for the customer and company. Simple. And sure, we got some experience and knowledge in how to run the rodeo.. Bonus: a fully functional BDR machine showering you with all the meetings you want. Pay? Of course it matters. At least market value and earning more is on you. Beers on the house but skipping the startup cool-aid. No pong. But ping me. 🌞

I see this a lot and it's mostly BS in hiring. Early-stage companies need focus. Hiring a strategic VP of marketing who spikes in product marketing can be a surefire way to get nothing. The key is to focus 100% on product marketing for messaging, positioning, and finding product-market fit. My advice: hire a senior product marketer for now. The rest will come once you've built those foundations. Early-stage startups need better advice and guidance from hiring firms. They should be honest with them and the candidates on what’s needed.
