✨Excited to share the publication of our latest research paper, "Advanced Electrical Network Stability Using Hybrid PV & EV Systems in Smart Cities," presented at the 2024 International Conference on Electrical, Computer, and Energy Technologies (ICECET)! Co-authored with Habiba Ahmed and Mohamad Nassereddine PhD, this paper marks a significant step in sustainable energy research. Our study explores the integration of electric vehicles (EV) and photovoltaic (PV) systems into the power grid, focusing on how these technologies enhance grid stability in the face of challenges like PV intermittency and EV charging demands, particularly with voltage and frequency variations. The research highlights the development of innovative management strategies alongside a comprehensive mathematical model to evaluate various stabilization methods. It emphasizes the crucial role of smart inverters, demand response programs, and energy storage in enhancing grid resilience. Moreover, the study demonstrates how hybrid PV and EV systems can significantly improve efficiency while maintaining strong network stability. In recent years, we have observed sudden growth of dispersed sources such as wind farms and photovoltaic power plants that cooperate with low-, medium- and high voltage lines. The location of the sources inside the network changes current traditional model of electricity grids from current flow from the source to the consumer, to the network of bidirectional current flow depending on generation of sources and power demand in specific points of a network. These changes make it necessary to invest in conversion of existing electricity grids, that is, to extend diameters of the wires in existing circuits, which is often also connected with replacement of the poles, or replacement of the transformers of higher rated power. Therefore, it is necessary to build shorter sections of a low voltage network, that is, to build additional stations in order to divide existing long circuits, which can’t face up to new reality, cooperation with many dispersed sources in specific circuits supplied from medium voltage/low voltage stations. 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 & 𝗥𝗙 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀: 𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 Smart meters, also known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), have been deployed by US energy companies for nearly 20 years, with about 100 million installed across the country. These smart meters offer numerous grid benefits, including more accurate and two-way system communication, and improved outage tracking for better grid management. The implementation of smart meters and advanced metering infrastructure, and the perceived potential for exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) has caused concern for some utility customers, leading them to opt out of smart-meter installation. EPRI, in collaboration with Con Edison and Ghent University of Belgium, launched a research project to assess RF levels within the utility's unique, densely populated urban environment. For all scenarios, the measured exposure levels (at a minimum distance of 0.3 meters) were well below the maximum permissible exposure limits. Smart meters and AMI infrastructure have a foundational role in managing the grid of the future.
