Just the other day, I heard a story about a professional who was struggling with a major challenge during a crucial phase in their career and felt like they were at a dead end. As a gynaecology clinic, we often receive patients who are young women in their mid and late 30s suffering from hot flashes, irregular periods and severe mood swings. A detailed diagnosis reveals that they are nearing menopause. Something unheard of amidst women in earlier generations. So what is causing this rather new phenomenon of early menopause? There are a few factors that causes this early degeneration in the reproductive system : 1. Nuclear family system which puts the enormous burden of running a household on two individuals, or even one. 2. Demanding job, where career growth and growth of children happen at the same time, which leads to women feeling physically and emotionally drained. 3. Health fads which encourage intermittent fasting, skipping meals, eating less, all with the objective of attaining health, irrespective of your body type. Considering the demands of daily life on your body and mind, what it requires is food that is warm and nourishing. Salads, millets and green juices - all Vata/dryness causing food, will only drain more energy from you. 4. Excessive exercise at odd hours will lead to early degeneration, especially if the body is not nourished with adequate fats and protein (ghee, milk, paneer and egg). Seek advice from your Ayurvedic expert for specific foods such as horse gram, sesame seed and others which can be included in your diet every month to prevent early menopause. If we know how to take care of our body during periods while knowing when to exercise and eat optimally, the onset of early menopause can be delayed. Vitex agnus-castus, commonly known as chasteberry, plays a significant role in supporting women experiencing menopause by helping to balance hormones, particularly by increasing progesterone levels and decreasing prolactin levels. During menopause, the natural decline in ovarian function leads to a reduction in estrogen and progesterone, which can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, and sleep disturbances. Vitex works by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce more luteinizing hormone (LH), which in turn can increase progesterone production and create a more favorable balance between estrogen and progesterone 3. This balance is crucial because low progesterone levels can exacerbate menopausal symptoms. Furthermore, Vitex has been shown to decrease prolactin levels, which is beneficial since elevated prolactin can contribute to irregular menstrual cycles and other hormonal imbalances 1. By lowering prolactin, Vitex helps to alleviate symptoms such as breast tenderness and mood swings that are often associated with high prolactin levels. Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Vitex in improving menopause-related symptoms. For instance, women using Vitex reported significant improvements in mood, sleep quality, and a reduction in night sweats and hot flashes 12. In summary, Vitex agnus-castus supports menopausal women by modulating hormone levels, specifically by promoting progesterone production and decreasing prolactin. These hormonal changes help mitigate the distressing symptoms of menopause, thereby improving the overall quality of life during this transitional stage.
