Since our announcement a while ago about our partnership with Project DEEP, we have been fielding questions on how our Zakat fund's mission is aligned with theirs. At the intersection of modern social impact strategies and the timeless principles of Islamic philanthropy, there lies a shared purpose: empowering individuals in need with dignity, choice, and agency. Through both unconditional lump sum direct cash transfers and Zakat, we see a transformative alignment. Here’s why these approaches resonate so deeply: 𝟏. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞: Just as Zakat is designed to uplift individuals without compromising their dignity, direct cash transfers allow recipients the freedom to address their most urgent needs on their terms. This empowers them with the autonomy to make decisions that best suit their unique circumstances. 𝟐. 𝐌𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Both Zakat and lump sum transfers ensure swift, direct support to those who need it most. By eliminating intermediaries and unnecessary delays, we can maximize immediate, meaningful impact where it matters. 𝟑. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲: A lump sum offers recipients the chance to make strategic investments in education, business, or essential needs—paving the way for long-term self-sufficiency. Similarly, Zakat is intended to elevate individuals from a state of need to financial independence, fostering sustainable growth. 𝟒. 𝐀 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 & 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲: At its heart, Zakat is an act of compassion, a redistribution of wealth to promote social justice and equity. Unconditional cash transfers reflect this spiritual ethos by offering a humane, data-backed solution to tackling economic inequality. As we move forward in this partnership with Project DEEP, we believe modern approaches to poverty alleviation can harmonize beautifully with traditional values. Together, we can create lasting, positive change that honors both the spirit of giving and the need for evidence-based, impactful solutions. In a world where success stories dominate the narrative and everyone vies for attention with bold claims, Impact / Failure, a biannual conference organised by the SELCO Foundation, stands out as a refreshing and courageous initiative. This unique platform encourages individuals and organisations to openly share their failures, analyse the root causes, and draw valuable lessons for better program design and implementation. It’s not easy to speak about your setbacks—it takes immense courage to be vulnerable and brutally honest about what went wrong. Yet, these moments of reflection often lead to the most profound insights and transformative change. At Social Alpha, we are proud partners of the SELCO Foundation and have consistently participated in this conference. We deeply resonate with its mission to foster an ecosystem that values learning as much as achievement. By embracing failure as a stepping stone to success, we collectively create a culture of resilience and innovation in the development sector and its association with philanthropy, innovation and entrepreneurship. I encourage all of you—philanthropists, entrepreneurs, CSR leaders or program designers—to join Impact Failure. Let’s break the stigma around failure and use it as a powerful tool for growth and impact. Together, we can build a more transparent, empathetic, and effective ecosystem to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, an opportunity to acknowledge the struggles people face living in poverty and the organisations working hard to help them. On this day, we wanted to highlight the work of our South West and West Midlands Social Investment Tax Relief (SITR) fund investees. Since the first SITR investment in 2016, 27 social enterprises received investment from the funds to help support their social impact ambitions in helping to dismantle poverty in the regions within which they operate. The social enterprises are making a positive difference to people living in poverty and often the furthest from access to basic needs, by providing accessible and inclusive health and wellbeing services, employment, training and more, empowering them to live healthier and more productive lives. To learn more about how the social enterprises are helping to eradicate poverty read the fund’s latest social impact report here: https://ow.ly/Xg0U50TLscA #EradicatePoverty #SocialImpact #PovertyAwareness #SITR #SocialEnterprise

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 is held annually on 17 October. It aims to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 and wider society. We’re delighted to celebrate 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱’s 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, US$11.5 billion in microfinance services have been provided to some of the most vulnerable clients worldwide to fight against 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆. These 20 million microloans have transformed lives, enabling many children to have brighter futures. 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 like Burentuya's from Mongolia highlight our impact. A mother of seven, Burentuya runs a tailoring service while her husband serves in the army. Limited resources hindered their earning potential, and her husband's salary covered only basic needs. Five years ago, she secured her first loan through VisionFund and experienced a 5️⃣ five-fold income increase by growing her business. She now devotes more time to meaningful conversations with each child, envisions in providing quality 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 for her children, and building a permanent home. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 also plays a part in 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 levels of 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆. 100% of 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 Mexico’s clients have insurance for life, accidents, debt and funerals; 98% have cancer coverage. Our evidence of impact is clear. After receiving their loans, our clients' 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶͟𝗺͟𝗽͟𝗿͟𝗼͟𝘃͟𝗲͟𝗱͟ by 𝟳𝟱%, with many reporting better nutrition and financial management. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱’s work is fulfilling our mission to create brighter futures for children, and we continue to adapt to global changes, including 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and a focus on women in rural areas. To learn more about 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gU-j-_fm Together, we can continue to support 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 that uplift vulnerable communities and improve their livelihoods and resilience. Program Design That Solves Problems and Leads to Organizational Extinction “Our organization strives to create that ideal world in our vision statement—a world where every problem we set out to solve is gone, and every barrier to a fulfilled life is removed. Essentially, Mudu, we’re working toward our own extinction—toward a day when our mission will be in past tense, and our vision will be reality.” These were the words of a friend privileged to run an NGO he founded just over a decade ago. It was a conversation we had while pondering impact. Impact. That gentle giant of a word. It struck me: How many social-concern organizations actually reach this point? Have you ever heard of an NGO shutting down because it successfully accomplished its mission? It’s a sobering question. Since the mid-1990s, significant aid has poured into Africa, funding countless programs to tackle social issues of various forms and sizes. Yet, looking around, more than a third of a century later, we still see persistent poverty, deteriorating governance, and health indicators that continue to cry out for external support. Why? Why do the same challenges persist despite the vast resources poured into addressing them? Is it that our problems, by their unique nature, stubbornly outpace the solutions we craft? Could it be rapid population growth and the accompanying social dislocation? Might it be that the evolving nature of social issues, reinventing themselves in ever more intricate guises, renders them intractable, even indomitable? Or could it be the solutions we design and implement—and their inherent tendency to leave the issues unresolved, only to rise again? Is it because our programs focus more on treating symptoms than addressing root causes? Are we empowering communities to thrive independently, or are we unintentionally creating cycles of dependency? What can we do differently with the programs we design? How can we ensure they lead to real, sustainable change? Let’s start a conversation. Share your thoughts or examples of programs that have truly empowered communities and delivered lasting results. #ProgramDesign #SustainableImpact #NGOFunding #DevelopmentWork #NonprofitSuccess
