If you are still calling your diversity framework #DEI you probably need to upgrade your programs. Diversity is dynamic, so must be your efforts at bringing diversity into your organization. You must work on the A (Accessibility) and B (Belonging) parts of the framework to make it current. There can be no real inclusion without Accessibility because it leaves people with disabilities out of your framework. Today I attended an inspiring session on Diversity in the Workplace as part of a course on Organizational Transformation and Change taken by Dr Shikha Bhardwaj. It made me reflect on the challenges of fostering acceptance and inclusivity in our work environments. One significant obstacle is that many of us were not introduced to the principles of inclusivity during our formative years, whether at home or in school and college. I am proud to be part of KMD, an organization that truly values diversity and inclusion. As a Black African woman working in IT in a Scandinavian society, I know firsthand the significance of representation and the power of diverse perspectives. “Diversity and inclusion is very, very important because we come with different backgrounds, we come with different cultures, we come with different mindset and when you put all of that together into a magi cube, you get the best of the best.” These words resonate deeply with me. In an industry often lacking in representation, especially for women of color, it’s essential that we create environments where everyone feels they belong and can contribute their unique insights. “In KMD there is a place for everyone that will and wants to take responsibility.” KMD’s commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion is not just about bringing diverse voices to the table but ensuring that each voice is heard and valued. Oh yess its HOLI!!..our workplaces, homes, colleges, etc are all radiating the vibrancy of colors, happiness, joy of togetherness, celebrations of bonding and fun of savoring those yum mithais(sweets) and what not. BUT IMAGINE, we are told to celebrate Holi with just one color( a white..Black, yellow whatsoever), I don't think we will enjoy it as much. The celebration may get muted, enthusiasm gutted, and participation rate may arguably nose dive. Why So...? Because, some of us love to play with Pink, some of them greens, some purples...its the beautiful choices we all appreciate and want those inclusion of multi colors..and we respect those choices...we Love the diversity of colors, the spirit of seeing everyone around camouflaged with beautiful colors gives us that ultimate joy. Festivals, celebrations are fun when such choices are represented. Likewise, why shouldn't our workplaces represent such diverse options. People with different color, race, religion,gender, demographics, different geographical representation etc etc.... why can't we make our workplaces more vibrant imagine the chemistry..imagine the fun!! Happy Pride Month! 🌈 This June, we are celebrating Pride Month to raise awareness about #LGBTIQA+ issues, sensitise others, and educate. Why celebrate Pride Month? Many people are still unable to freely embrace their diverse lifestyles. In fact, many LGBTQIA+ individuals are forced to conceal their sexual orientation or gender identities, and even fear for their lives in many places in the world. Likeweise, many LGBTQIA+ workers still struggle for acceptance and recognition. In today's diverse workforce, it is crucial for #SMEs to prioritize #diversity #management and actively support LGBTQIA+ individuals – not only in June but all year round. It’s not only about sexual orientation! Sexual orientation always already intersects with other #diversity markers such as #gender identities, #ethnicity, #age, #religion, #care-taking duties, #abilities or #education. By acknowledging this approach, #SMEs can address more holistically the diverse challenges faced by individuals and ensure that their employees have the same opportunities to thrive. Taking Action in Your SME: Here are some practical steps SMEs can take to create a more LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplace: ✔ Inclusive Benefits: Ensure health insurance and other benefits for all ✔ Respectful Workplace: Implement clear policies against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Train managers and employees on LGBTQIA+ inclusion. ✔ Gender-Neutral Language: Respect individual pronouns and avoid gendered language in policies and communication. ✔ Allyship Programs: Encourage employees to be allies to LGBTQIA+ colleagues by creating safe spaces for open dialogue. ❕ Remember: There's no one-size-fits-all approach. The key is to continuously assess and improve your #DEI efforts.
