This past Tuesday was Hunger Action Day! CEO Scott Rumpsa joined The Morning Mix on Fox 17 to share how neighbors like you can help nourish our neighbors and build a stronger, healthier communtiy. Hunger doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Families who struggle to access the food they need often face other challenges, and a setback in one area creates a ripple effect across systems: education, childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, food, finances, and transportation. Why a £3billion pound Sandwich shop gave me a Free Meal? Last Saturday, after volunteering to feed families and children in my community, I drove about 30 miles to another town, still wearing my volunteer shirt. As I walked into a sandwich shop 🥪🥪🥪, the person at the counter recognized me as part of the Gillingham S.T.R.E.E.T Angels, a group dedicated to feeding families and children in the community ensuring no child goes to bed hungry. When I went to pay, he insisted, "No, take it for free." He explained that Pret a Manger, the company he worked for, supports the homeless through food giveaways. Lesson Learned: Corporate Kindness: This experience showed me that even big companies like Pret a Manger are compassionate and actively support their communities. Building Loyalty: Acts of kindness, like providing free meals to volunteers, not only support those in need but also build loyalty and goodwill within the community. Food insecurity is a worldwide problem that manifests itself locally in all our communities. Over the past few years, Curcio Webb, LLC’s holiday donation has been made to Chef José Andrés World Central Kitchen program. The World Central Kitchen teams are first on the spot wherever hot meals and human kindness are needed. Karen McKeon volunteered for a ½ day volunteer shift Thursday, June 27th at Mercer Street Friends Food Bank. In 2021, Karen directed her Curcio Webb charitable donation to Mercer Street Friends. At the time she shared that “the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank channels 5.5 million pounds of food and groceries annually to a network of over 100 local food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, meal sites, schools, senior and disabled programs, and low-income housing sites. Our food distribution and hunger prevention programs reach over 60,000 people who face the pain and indignity of hunger.” Five point five MILLION pounds annually—how impressive is that? The day Karen volunteered at the Food Bank they needed help labeling bags for “SHUP” (their Send HUnger Packing program). SHUP is a "meal bag program that helps feed food insecure students over the weekend when they lack access to school meals." It distributes 10,000 bags a month to students in need throughout Mercer County, New Jersey. Karen, your in-the-trenches work at the Food Bank is so important. Thank you! It’s not just students in Mercer County, New Jersey who run the risk of going hungry on the weekends. Curcio Webb is going to address local food insecurity for children at our upcoming annual company meeting. Brian Pieper and his wife Katie are spearheading an opportunity for us to pack bags of food for children to eat during the weekend. They’re tapping into a local program that helps kids get meals on weekends i.e., where they are already participating in a meals-at-school program. For the last 14 years, Denny's has raised funds toward ending childhood hunger through the generosity of our guests, which has helped us provide $13.6 million to the nonprofit No Kid Hungry since 2011. It’s an amazing community effort and a need that we don’t take lightly – donations help remove barriers that prevent kids from getting the meals they need to succeed. Today felt like the perfect time to jump back into LinkedIn. The last 10-12 months have been quite a journey both personally and professionally. This post isn't meant to relive the last year but to encourage everyone that when your life is turned upside down unexpectedly, it can lead to wonderful outcomes. I found through prayer, reflection, and unwavering support from friends and family, what was initially something extraordinarily difficult became a true blessing. Some will notice I have a "gap" in my work history now. About 4 months. 4 months to jettison a lot of baggage, get my mind and body back to neutral (thank you Brendan Ferns for recommending Getting to Neutral by Trevor Moawad), and to dream again. 4 months to reconnect with my wife and start to make decisions that are focused on me and my family first, not what a job might dictate or require. Call it a gap or a sabbatical or whatever you'd like; I knew in order to be the best for my family and for wherever I chose to go professionally, I had to reset. In October of 2023 I got to meet with some of the team at Grubb Ventures. I wasn't sure if I was ready to come off the sidelines yet. Was I mentally ready? Did I complete my "factory reset?" A few things were clear that were critical to me: 1. The leaders truly cared about the people there. It wasn't lip service or just some core value splattered on a wall. 2. They believed the company was ready to make smart, strategic changes in response to recent growth (I like leading through change believe or not). 3. Grubb cares about the community they live and work in. I joined Grubb as its CFO in November (I know I'm late posting about it). And today we sorted and packed eggs at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. We did it together. Just like we do each day at the office. I'm so thankful to the team at Grubb for choosing me. I'm grateful to everyone who supported me this last year, especially my wife and family. And while I know God doesn't ever have to reveal His plan for me, I'm blessed that He continues to orient my steps.

The rising costs of living paired with the expiration of some Pandemic benefits have intensified food insecurity across southwestern Pennsylvania as families work to meet basic needs. Calls to our PA 211 Southwest resource hotline has seen a 50% increase in food assistance inquiries over the past year. Between 2021 and 2022, the annual survival budget for a family of four in Pennsylvania rose to nearly $89,000 from $80,000. “This budget reflects only the basics and no extras,” says Jen Schuchart, director of meeting basic needs. “Folks who are working full-time or multiple jobs are having to make these difficult choices of whether to pay rent or feed themselves and their children. Costs are rising rising. Mobile Meals of Toledo has experienced a 25% increase in food costs,transportation, and, labor. Even with that we haven’t passed cost on. What does that mean? Do the math we are eating into our reserves. Also government, contract funding, and insurers increases support has only gone up from 0% to 6% in 3 years. Help us find a sustainable path forward
