In the spirit of the ongoing Paris Olympics, shouting out this excellent 2022 article from John Lauermann that contextualizes downward-shifting attitudes toward American mega-events within an evolving understanding of what effective urban governance means from the 1980s to modern day. Lauermann’s conclusions are convincing. Host cities traditionally investing in these grand spectacles as pure growth vehicles has been proven consistently to be, at best, high-risk; declining appetite for speculation is sensible especially in a digital age where participation is possible anywhere around the world. His argument regarding the evolution of urban governance toward a more nuanced municipal statecraft approach, in which mega-events must fit into a diversified “urban entrepreneurialism 2.0” model (citing a 2020 Rossi and Wang article), especially resonates with me. Olympics, World Expos, and their ilk have a role to play in our global society still, but work remains to find their best fit beyond promises of regeneration and short-term economics that don’t always come. It’s a challenge I continue to find worth pursuing, and appreciate work by experts like Lauermann, as well as others such as Beatriz Garcia and her advocacy toward empowering the cultural components inherent to what makes them so eternally captivating. https://lnkd.in/eHX3cf6h
