Sorry podcast listeners, we underestimated you 😓 Have you ever listened to a podcast with other people around? Whether you are in the car listening to a podcast out loud, listening in the office or just in your house, CUMULUS MEDIA and Signal Hill Insights data suggests that podcast listeners are massively undercounted due to co-listening habits. Consumers who co-listen make up nearly a third or the kids/ family genre of podcasting. 11% of podcast time spent occurs via smart speakers. 6% of podcast time spent occurs via connected TVs. 17% of podcast time spent occurs in the car. All of these have the opportunity for more than one listener. The obvious answer would be adults who listen to podcasts while their children are present, or co-listen to podcasts that are intended for children. However, 30% of people who co-listen do so with friends. A key topic of conversation at the podcast show this year was the line between TV and a visual podcast. TV analytics typically assume at least a 1.3 viewers per single view counted. For example, the traitors companion podcast “Uncloaked” was aired on the BBC, a podcast of this nature encourages co-listening. Unlike the stuff of “Only Murders in the Building” shared listenership in podcasting can become more mainstream. So…. Will Goggle Box soon include podcasting? Channel4 lets chat. #Podcasting #IndustryNews #PodcastListeners #Traitors

Just a reminder that there are many people (generally of a younger generation) who have never read a newspaper. They get their news, entertainment and info through social media, podcasts and YouTube. For them, the ‘connection’ to others is just as important as the information. So if you ever hear someone dismiss your podcast, or your podcast idea, with ‘oh I don’t listen to podcasts’ or ‘no one I know listens to podcasts’ … you can remind them there are people who feel the same way about newspapers or even free to air TV. Also, you can tell them that half the population over the age of 12 has listened to a podcast in the past month (well, close enough, it’s 48% according to Infinite Dial). And is this fragmented media landscape, that’s not so bad. The numbers are also consistently on the rise. As a ‘podcaster’ myself it can be seen as either ‘super cool’ or somewhat frivolous. But podcasts are fantastic at unpacking complex issues (which is what I love to do most - specifically in the ag/rural space). So, I’m here to just challenge your thinking, when you have an immediate reaction to what a podcast entails or its worth. And I’m challenging you to listen to one. Pick a subject you like and ask Google for a podcast on the topic! You can thank me later 😊 #podcasting #marketing #digitalmedia #podcastadvertising #podcastcoach #podcasts #media

Wow! Exciting research on co-listening from CUMULUS MEDIA and Signal Hill Insights! In the kids' podcast community, we've long known that our audience is undercounted due to high rates of co-listening not being captured in the metrics - and not being corrected by an estimate of how many people are actually listening. This report shows that not only are rates of co-listening high in Kids & Family podcasts, those who listen to Kids & Family podcasts are more likely to co-listen to podcasts overall. The data is clear - Kids & Family podcasts are the top podcasts for co-listening behavior. So how should co-listening be counted? The report mentions that family streaming apps like Disney+ have 1.8 viewers. With joint listening behavior being so much higher than joint viewing behavior (think about how many kids watch on screens alone), I would estimate that podcast rates are even higher. Of course, we'd need our own study to confirm that! This point in the press release underlines what kids podcasters have been saying for years: "Podcast selling estimates never contemplated ad exposures by multiple people to the same show. The podcast industry is leaving 'ears on the table.'" (Okay, so maybe that's not the most appealing metaphor. But you get the point 🤣 ) Press release: https://lnkd.in/e8SfVgdi

Can I save you years of frustration? Strange question, isn't it? But what if instead of publishing dozens of episodes hoping your audience will find you... ...you could design a podcast that generated leads from your first show? (This can happen even if only a few people listen to it). The other option is to publish episodes for years and never get any clients - how frustrating would that be???? I have a friend, Jerry Potter, who worked in radio for 20 years and has been a social media strategist for the last 9 (weird combo, right?)... …and he’s been helping private clients develop podcasts that perform well on social media, grow themselves, and generate leads and sales. And now, starting April 8th, he’ll teach the same tactics publicly for the first time in a special workshop. In this workshop, you'll discover an easy thing that anyone can add to their podcast that will: --Increase the number of new people listening to each episode --Get those people to finish the episodes --Have more of those listeners take the next step toward becoming clients It’s based on a lesson that he never would have learned as a podcaster - he only knows this because of his 20+ years as a radio personality & programmer. And that's just ONE of the things he's going to cover in his podcasting workshop. I watched one of Jerry's videos recently, which helped me create a YouTube podcast channel for a client whose podcast I produce. I've been a participant in other programs of Jerry's, and he always has a unique take on a subject that no one else has. I've discovered his unique strategies work! That's why I have enrolled in this program. I've started several podcasts previously, but none of them have paid off. However, Jerry just might change my mind. Want to join me? Tickets are only $17! There wouldn't be a month in my year where I don't hear someone say "Do you reckon we've got enough podcasts?" For a podcast fan, that question is ridiculous. Has anyone ever said "Do you reckon we've got enough books?" or "Do you think there are enough YouTube videos?" or "Don't you reckon we've made enough TV?" Of course not, because if you're a reader or YouTube fan or lover of TV shows, you're always looking for the next bingeable piece of content and the same goes for podcasts. If you're a fan, you want the next show waiting in the queue for when you finish the one you're listening to. The number of stories, concepts, ideas, conspiracy theories, true crime tales and corners of the world I've been exposed to by listening to podcasts means every time I see a new one that looks interesting I can't wait to press play. And to see listening continuing to increase, especially here in Australia, proves the desire for quality podcast content is only growing. So, if you've got any pods you're loving at the moment I'd love to hear about them and let's keep those listening stats climbing! #PodcastRecommendations #PodcastCommunity #PodcastListening #PodcastInspiration #PodcastGrowth #DiscoverNewPodcasts #PodcastingAustralia #PodcastsToListenTo #ContentCreators #PodcastLove Image: NOVA Entertainment

I recently saw a report from PodMatch that caught my eye. It was all about the chances of success and failure as a podcaster, and gave stats for when shows call it quits, after: 8 episodes: 47.98% 50 episodes: 10.59% 100 episodes: 6.12% 200 episodes: 2.16% 300 episodes: 3.40% (I realize this doesn't equal 100%, so there were outlier numbers, but you get the idea) As you can see, most podcasters stop before they hit just 8 episodes, but it doesn't have to be that way! As someone who's released almost 900 episodes of my own show, I believe that podcasting is all about hanging in while others are dropping out. It's a heck of a lot easier if you have help with the editing side of things, and that's where PodAssist comes in ... Since 2015 they've edited, post-produced, and provided show notes on over 8,000 episodes for some of the top online influencers, business owners, coaches, course creators, and even a large publicly-traded company with over 30,000 employees. They're really good at what they do! They don't often have openings for new clients, but they currently have two spots available. Book a call to see if it's a fit by going here: https://www.podassist.com/ And if you have any questions, email my brother Matt Mawhinney at matt@podassist.com!
