I usually share my publications here, but today I want to share something special. For the last 8 years or so I have been working with Dual-Energy CT, which is a special type of Computed Tomography Image where we can directly measure the body composition (e.g. Fat or Bone Mineral Density) and contrast uptake in patient. The problem: We would have to open special software for each scanner type, images were stored in different imaging formats and the information displayed was not always displayed the same way. Also you could not use images in our primary working environment. Now finally we are able to solved this problem through standardization: - Dual-energy CT images are now stored in a standardized multienergy format (DICOM supplement 188) - Dual-Energy CT images are read in our new Sectra PACS (which supports the DICOM standard) - Radiologist can keep working in the PACS and still use Dual-Energy CT images - Recommendations for how radiologists should report on Dual-Energy CT images are in the local guidelines That this really works you can see in the attached phantom scan. It is just "infrastructure", and you never notice "infrastructure" if everything is running smoothly. Today after 8 years of hard work we are finally here. This is innovation at it's best if you ask me - in hindsight it looks so simple. ...now we just need to convince the remaining Dual-energy CT scanner vendors to store images in the correct format. (None mentioned, but you know who you are!) Thanks to all who made this happen!
