It’s long overdue, but the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released new requirements for removing lead service lines in the U.S. Access to safe and affordable water is fundamental to the health and wellbeing of our communities. It’s crucial to prioritize efforts to remove lead service lines, especially in rural and underserved neighborhoods that have historically been overlooked. Read more about the new requirements here: https://lnkd.in/gHZ4frtZ
Access to safe, affordable water is a cornerstone of a healthy community and a human right. For generations, lead exposure has silently robbed millions of children - especially those living in communities of color, communities with lower incomes, and rural places - of this right. With this regulation in place, our country finally says: no more. RWJF applauds EPA for requiring the removal of all remaining lead service lines in the United States within the next decade. It is now incumbent upon all of us—water utilities, policymakers, community leaders, and philanthropies—to work together to devote the necessary resources to beating that deadline and prioritizing the most affected neighborhoods for immediate action.

King County Executive Dow Constantine’s years of service will leave an incomparable mark on our region. His tireless commitment to ambitious, evidence-based policy and his courage to address difficult and complex issues head-on have set the bar for the kind of leadership we need to meet our most pressing challenges. Under his direction, addressing homelessness has been a North Star for the County, and has helped our region approach this problem with collaboration, perseverance, and empathy. We are deeply appreciative of his creation of long-term programs like the groundbreaking Health Through Housing Initiative, robust investments in veterans, seniors, and human services, and a County-wide commitment to creating stability for all—there are critical tools to help organizations like Plymouth make progress. There is still work to do to ensure everyone in our region has a place to call home, but King County is better equipped to meet this need thanks to Executive Constantine’s work. As an advocate and a King County resident—thank you, Executive Constantine…the work continues! Say it LOUDER! Also an idea anyone can steal - we need a (well paid) national library response team we can deploy for when this stuff happens, because it will keep happening. A team made up of folks who are knowledgable in providing not only information and assistance navigating the stuff that comes after a crisis, but also things like programming and storytimes to help with morale. I think this is an especially good idea since many of the folks working to help those in crisis are also in crisis them helps. I am gonna keep telling people about this idea, until someone with the right connections can make it happen. So please steal it.
DYK? In Florida evacuation shelters are staffed by library workers who were called into action when the state leg refused to continue funding Red Cross to operate shelters. Seeing dozens of people connecting to family via library wifi in Asheville reminds me that maybe most people - even in those states - don’t know that. We shouldn’t be the Swiss Army knife of communities BUT WE ARE. We need to talk about THAT bc when we keep this invisible people - even library friendly folx - see ours as diminishing value with little ROI in their lives. And you know what? I don’t blame them for not knowing. I blame us for not making this a part of our story. Libraries MATTER.
