- [Nick] There are lots of situations where it's important to know exactly how many words are in a document. Freelance writers are often paid by the word and students often have specific requirements for research papers. So, first I want you to look near the bottom left corner of the Microsoft Word window. And you can see from my document, it tells me that I have five pages in this document and I have 1,886 words in the document. And for some people, that's all you need. But you can also click on that word count and it will open up this panel with so much more information. Page count word count, character count, with spaces, without spaces. Really useful information. Naturally, when you're done, you can close this window. Next, it may be useful to know the word or character count in a specific part of your document.
