- [Rick] In this video, we'll learn about some changes that have occurred with vSAN 8 and we'll focus on the express storage architecture. So most of what you know about vSAN and most of what you've learned in the last couple videos is all the same. The original storage architecture of vSAN was designed for environments in which we were going to have hard disk drives as capacity devices. So in some of the videos we've already seen, we saw we had a hard disk drive acting as a capacity device. And in the past, those hard disk drives have been by far the most affordable option. We can have a lot of capacity at a relatively low cost, and then we were using this more expensive SSD as the cache device. And so with this two tier architecture, we have a cache tier and a capacity tier, but times have changed and all flash configurations are now much more affordable than they were in the past.
