Virtual switch features: Port mirroring

Virtual switch features: Port mirroring

- [Rick] In this video, we'll learn how port mirroring can be used, to analyze traffic using a sniffer. So port mirroring can be used to send a copy of all of the traffic on one port to another port. So for example, here we see a packet coming in from 192.168.1.12, and it's arriving at our virtual switch. And let's assume that this packet is destined for 10.1.1.11. And what I now want to do is I want to say well, I want to take a copy of all of the traffic bound for this particular IP address, and I want to send a copy of it to this IP address as well. And on this machine, I'm running a sniffer. I'm analyzing all of this traffic that is bound for this VM. That's what port mirroring does. It enables us to basically duplicate all of this traffic, and send it to another system, where maybe I have something like a sniffer running. And there's a number of different ways that we can set up port mirroring. So here we are in the VMware documentation, and I just wanted to show you quickly…
