The AL Surface shader
- [Instructor] Although there is certainly no shortage of materials that can be used and material effects that can be created in V-Ray, one of the latest additions to the material family has a lot of people quite excited, not only because of its ability to create exceptionally realistic skin-type materials, but also because of its versatility. We're referring, of course, to the new alSurface shader that has been added to V-Ray in 3ds Max in the form of the V-Ray AL Surface material. The AL in the shader refers to Anders Langlands, the VFX artist and supervisor who wrote a whole series of alShaders for the Arnold renderer. His idea was to add production shaders to Arnold that he felt better suited his VFX needs with one of the most used shaders in this group being alSurface, an uber shader capable of recreating most surface types, most notably, as we say, subsurface volumes such skin.
