Evaluating Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

- Interaction to Next Paint, INP, was added to the Core Web Vital metrics in early 2024, replacing First Input Delay, or FID. That's why if you're looking at older resources about site speed, you may not see a mention of INP. INP was added because it provides a more accurate sense of how responsive a website is to inputs from a visitor. What INP is measuring is how quickly your website pages visually respond to visitor input. For example, when you click on an Add To Cart button or submit a form, how long does it take before the visual confirmation that the action has occurred is shown to your visitor? When measuring INP, good is less than 200 milliseconds. Needs improvement is between 200 milliseconds and 500 milliseconds. And poor is anything above 500 milliseconds. Note that Google only considers three types of actions in INP, a mouse click, a screen tap if it's a touchscreen device, and a keyboard press.
