When do I need LOD calculations?
In this chapter, I would like to introduce you to the last type of calculation in Tableau, the level of detail calculation or LOD for short. When do we need this type of calculation? As you already know from previous chapters, Tableau always aggregates our measures at visualization level, that is, at the level of detail that the dimensions in our view specify. However, sometimes it happens that you want to aggregate at a different level of detail than that of the visualization, then you can use level of detail calculations to specify the level of detail that you want to use. Similar to table calculations, which you learned about in the last chapter, you can use level of detail calculations to aggregate at a higher level of detail, for example, adding another aggregation on top of the existing aggregation. In some use cases, you are free to decide whether to use table calculations or an LOD. But level of detail calculations can do much more. You can also use the LOD expression to aggregate at a more granular level than what is presented. And under certain circumstances, you can even include values in your calculation that a filter should actually exclude. Let's look at all of this in the following videos of this chapter.
