- In my latest research, we found that passion and inspiration for our work can be a buffer from burnout. We also saw that a lack of connection to the values and goals of the organization has the reverse effect. This can lead our people to feel less effective, that their efforts aren't valued, and can make them question whether they were good at their job in the first place. We also found that when people are overworked and exhausted, they lose sight of the mission. Roles that have a strong attachment to the stakeholder like teachers, healthcare professionals, nonprofit workers are at increased risk but all of us can fall prey to overworking. The old saying, "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." Is a dangerous myth. In many cases, that passion can switch from harmonious to obsessive, and that is what leads to burnout. We have to watch for that in our high-performing and most dedicated team…
