- In a network, our devices, they should agree on what time it is. One reason that's important is we can do a better job of troubleshooting if we know what time a certain issue occurred. Another reason to have accurate time is the use of digital certificates, which expire at certain dates and times. These digital certificates are used when you connect to a secure website, as an example, and you want to securely enter maybe your credit card information. If we don't have accurate time, we might not think a specific digital certificate is valid. For these reasons and more, we want our network devices to agree on what time it is. That reminds me of the saying, "A man with one watch always knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never quite sure." We want our network to have one watch or one time source. We're going to be able to keep our network devices time in sync using network time protocol or NTP. So who do…
