- Now that we understand that that a MAC address is a physical address, let's consider a very popular logical address. It's an IP version four address, where IP stands for internet protocol. And we're going to see later on that there's also an IP version six address, but for now, understand that an IP address is a logical address because it's an address that needs to be assigned to the device, as opposed to a MAC address, which is coded into the hardware by the manufacturer. To better understand an IP version four address, consider a street address. Let's say that your friend tells you they live at 13825th Street. That's a bit confusing. They didn't separate the house number from the street number. So you don't know if they live at 138 25th Street, or maybe they live at 1382 Fifth Street.
