How do you respond when the pay conversation doesn't go as planned? No matter how strongly your manager advocates for you, factors outside of their control could still prevent them from accommodating your request. No matter what the outcome is, here are some pointers to keep in mind. First, acknowledge the context behind why your increase may not be supported. Has the company recently announced cost cutting measures? Is a salary freeze in place in our budgets more restrictive this year? As a people manager, I once had a direct report who received a lower salary increase than she was expecting during the annual compensation review. Even though the increase she received was much higher than typical market practice, I had to remind her that I was operating within a limited budget. The same could be true for your leaders.
