The 85% rule for consistency over burnout

- Here's why you don't want to consistently work at 100% capacity. When you're constantly giving it your all, you have no room left in the tank to handle contingencies and you signal to management that you can handle more workload and higher targets. I've seen high performers make this mistake only to end up having more work dumped on them than anyone else in their team for no extra reward. My recommendation is to follow the 85% Rule, consistently perform at about 85% of your capacity. Rather than working harder, focus on improving your efficiency and proficiency to get more done in the same amount of time. That way, you're still demonstrating improvement without skating on the edge of burnout. And when it makes sense to step up, you'll have plenty left in the tank to impress.
